The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified efforts to preserve unity within its ranks following a high-level meeting with representatives of the Kwankwasiyya Movement over ongoing disagreements in Kano State.
The closed-door meeting, which took place on Monday night and lasted several hours, brought together senior figures of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the national leadership of the NDC, led by the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson. The discussions were aimed at addressing lingering disputes between members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and legacy party officials in Kano, a state widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most politically significant electoral strongholds.
Party sources described the meeting as frank, constructive and focused on finding common ground that would strengthen cohesion within the party ahead of future political engagements. The intervention comes amid growing concerns among stakeholders that unresolved internal disagreements could undermine the party’s prospects in one of the country’s most influential political battlegrounds.
In a statement issued after the meeting by the National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Osa Director Esq., the party confirmed that the discussions centered on resolving grievances and promoting inclusiveness among all stakeholders in Kano State.
According to the statement, the national leadership of the party has taken on a mediatory role in order to ensure that all interests are fairly represented and that no group feels marginalized within the party structure.
The party spokesman explained that Senator Dickson and other national leaders are committed to fostering unity and strengthening internal mechanisms that encourage participation by every member of the party.
He stated that the intervention was designed to enhance inclusion, restore confidence among stakeholders and ensure that all party members have equal opportunities to contribute to the growth and development of the NDC.
“The NDC leadership is mediating in the process in order to enhance inclusion and participation by every party member,” the statement said.
The leadership further reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and assured members that the party would not impose candidates in Kano State or elsewhere across the country.
According to the party, internal democracy remains one of the core values upon which the NDC is being built, and all aspirants will be given the opportunity to contest fairly through transparent and credible processes.
“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State, and indeed across the nation, as the party cherishes the virtues of internal democracy,” the statement added.
The development comes against the backdrop of growing tensions within the Kano chapter of the party over issues relating to leadership positions, representation and the administration of party affairs.
Political observers have closely monitored developments in Kano because of the state’s strategic importance in national elections. Kano remains one of the largest voting blocs in the country, making stability within any major political party operating in the state a critical factor in electoral calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting also sought to calm fears that the disagreements could lead to further divisions within the party. Party leaders reportedly emphasized the need for dialogue, compromise and mutual respect among members as the NDC continues to expand its presence across the country.
Beyond addressing the Kano dispute, the party leadership used the opportunity to clarify issues surrounding reports of alleged primary election outcomes that have been circulating on social media and other online platforms.
The NDC firmly denied claims that it had released official results of primary elections in any state of the federation.
According to the party, several unofficial lists and documents have been circulating online, creating confusion among members and the public. The leadership warned supporters against relying on such materials and urged them to await official communications from authorized party channels.
“The NDC has not released any official results of its primary elections in any state. Hence, the public and party members are urged to disregard any such list in circulation,” Osa Director stated.
The clarification is seen as an effort to prevent misinformation from further complicating internal discussions and fueling speculation about candidate selections ahead of future electoral contests.
The current dispute involving the Kwankwasiyya Movement is believed to be linked to disagreements over political representation and a reported 60/40 power-sharing arrangement that has generated controversy within the Kano chapter of the party.
The situation has reportedly led to disagreements over candidate nominations, allegations of marginalization and threats of possible defections by some stakeholders. However, leaders of the Kwankwasiyya Movement have at various times denied some of the claims attributed to them, insisting on their commitment to finding an amicable resolution.
The NDC leadership’s decision to directly intervene reflects its determination to prevent the crisis from escalating and to maintain unity within its growing political coalition.
Party officials expressed optimism that continued dialogue would help resolve outstanding issues and strengthen relationships among members.
Analysts believe the outcome of the reconciliation efforts could significantly influence the party’s fortunes in Kano and potentially shape its broader political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
For now, the NDC leadership appears focused on building consensus, promoting inclusiveness and ensuring that all stakeholders remain engaged in the party’s democratic processes. The meeting with the Kwankwasiyya delegation is being viewed as an important step toward achieving those objectives and preserving unity within one of Nigeria’s emerging political platforms.
