Catholic Priest’s Vehicle Allegedly Vandalised After Confrontation in Enugu Church
A member of the Knights of St. John International, Sir Iyke Nwatakwocha, has been accused of confronting a Catholic priest shortly after Sunday Mass at St. Anthony Catholic Church, New GRA, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The confrontation allegedly escalated into an attack on the priest’s vehicle, which was reportedly vandalised shortly after the 6am Mass.
The priest, identified as Rev. Fr. Valentine Chimaobi Nwajiagu, an Assistant Parish Priest of Assumption Catholic Church, Nkwo Nike, was said to have been at St. Anthony Catholic Church as part of a priestly exchange programme when the incident occurred.
According to sources familiar with the incident, Nwajiagu had just concluded the early morning Mass when Nwatakwocha allegedly approached him and engaged him in a confrontation.
The reason for the confrontation remains unclear, while details surrounding what transpired between the two men before the alleged vandalism were not immediately available.
Sources, however, alleged that the disagreement became heated before the priest’s vehicle was attacked and damaged.
Some worshippers who reportedly attempted to intervene were allegedly threatened during the incident.
Photographs from the scene showed significant damage to the black vehicle. The front windscreen appeared to have been extensively shattered, with numerous cracks and impact marks spreading across the glass.
Two windows on the visible side of the vehicle were also reportedly smashed, leaving large openings in the doors. Pieces of broken glass could be seen around the damaged areas and across portions of the vehicle.
The condition of the windscreen, which displayed extensive spiderweb-like cracks, suggested that it had sustained repeated impacts.
The incident has reportedly generated concern among members of the congregation, particularly over allegations that the confrontation may not have been an isolated occurrence.
Some worshippers claimed that Nwatakwocha had previously confronted the priest at his parish earlier in the year.
The allegation of a previous confrontation has heightened concerns among some members of the church, who are now calling for the circumstances surrounding the latest incident to be properly investigated.
Some worshippers have also urged the Catholic Diocese of Enugu to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of priests and prevent further confrontations.
They argued that disagreements involving members of the church should be resolved through established channels rather than through physical confrontation or acts capable of causing damage to property.
It was not immediately established whether the priest or the Catholic Church had formally reported the alleged incident to the police.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including the immediate cause of the confrontation and whether anyone was arrested or questioned by law enforcement authorities, remained unclear as of Sunday night.
The identities of any other persons who may have been involved in the alleged vandalism were also not immediately known.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Catholic Diocese of Enugu were unsuccessful as of press time.
The communication director of the diocese, Rev. Fr. Aneke Anthony, reportedly did not respond to calls placed to his telephone.
The Knights of St. John International, an organisation within the Catholic Church, had also not publicly commented on the allegation at the time of filing the report.
The incident comes amid growing calls within religious communities for disputes involving clergy, parishioners and church organisations to be handled through dialogue and established disciplinary procedures.
While the allegations against Nwatakwocha remain unproven, the reported damage to the priest’s vehicle has raised questions about what led to the confrontation and whether the matter could have been resolved without escalation.
Church members are now awaiting clarification from the relevant authorities and church leadership on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Catholic Diocese of Enugu is expected to establish the facts surrounding the confrontation, including whether there was a prior dispute between the priest and the accused member and what triggered the alleged attack.
Until the completion of any investigation, the allegations against Nwatakwocha remain claims and have not been independently established.
Further developments, including any possible police investigation, disciplinary action by the church or response from those involved, are expected to shed more light on the incident.
