Peter Obi Meets NDC Leaders on Democracy Day, Reaffirms Commitment to New Nigeria Vision

Presidential candidate of NDC and leading opposition figure, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the vision of building a New Nigeria, following a series of strategic meetings with key leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on the occasion of the nation’s Democracy Day celebration.

In a message released on June 12, Obi disclosed that he held fruitful discussions with prominent figures of the party, including the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, and the party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The meetings, according to Obi, focused on strengthening the party’s structures, deepening internal unity, and advancing the collective mission of providing Nigerians with purposeful and compassionate leadership.

June 12 holds special significance in Nigeria’s democratic history as it commemorates the struggle for democratic governance and the sacrifices made by countless citizens in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and representative government. Against this backdrop, Obi said the consultations offered an opportunity for reflection and renewed determination among leaders of the NDC.

“On this June 12 Democracy Day, I had useful meetings with my partners in the building of the New Nigeria that is Possible,” Obi stated. “The discussions were constructive and inspiring, reaffirming our shared commitment to the future of our nation and the aspirations of millions of Nigerians.”

The former Anambra State governor noted that despite being a relatively young political platform, the NDC has continued to demonstrate resilience, vision, and growing national acceptance. He described the party as “the party of the future,” stressing that its rapid growth within a short period reflects the desire of Nigerians for a new political direction anchored on competence, accountability, and people-oriented governance.

According to Obi, the NDC, though barely four months old, has already begun laying the foundation for a movement that seeks to transform Nigeria’s political culture and governance architecture. He acknowledged that the party faces challenges common to emerging political organizations but maintained that these obstacles would be overcome through unity, dedication, and collective sacrifice.

Political analysts have often pointed to the importance of cohesion within opposition parties seeking to provide a viable alternative to established political structures. Obi echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that leaders and members of any political family must be prepared to place the greater good above personal interests.

He stressed that tolerance, accommodation, and sacrifice remain indispensable virtues in the pursuit of any meaningful political project.

“The leaders and members of a committed political family must be willing to make sacrifices and show tolerance and accommodation, even in difficult circumstances,” Obi said. “This shared understanding is essential for building trust, strengthening unity, and sustaining the vision we collectively hold for national transformation.”

Observers say such remarks underscore ongoing efforts within the NDC to consolidate its internal structures and maintain harmony among its diverse stakeholders. The party has attracted considerable attention from Nigerians seeking alternatives to traditional political platforms and has continued to advocate reforms aimed at improving governance, economic productivity, and social welfare.

Obi reiterated that all principal actors within the party remain united by a common objective: the creation of a better Nigeria where leadership is driven by service, competence, and accountability. He noted that the discussions with Dickson and Kwankwaso reflected a strong consensus on the need to continue building a movement capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

He further emphasized that the NDC remains committed to democratic ideals and productive governance, describing the party as a vehicle for national renewal and sustainable development.

“We are all committed to this goal,” Obi stated. “The NDC remains the vehicle that will convey Nigeria through purposeful, compassionate leadership, with a firm commitment to productivity and democratic ideals toward the New Nigeria that is Possible.”

The Democracy Day meetings come at a time when many Nigerians continue to grapple with economic difficulties, insecurity, unemployment, and concerns over governance. Against this backdrop, Obi’s message sought to inspire hope and reinforce confidence in the possibility of positive change through collective action and democratic engagement.

As Nigeria celebrates another year of democratic governance, the consultations among the NDC leadership signal a determination to strengthen opposition politics and advance a vision centered on national transformation. For Obi and his political allies, the journey toward building a New Nigeria remains an ongoing mission—one that they insist is achievable through unity, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

The meetings concluded with renewed optimism among party leaders and supporters, reinforcing the belief that through cooperation and shared purpose, a more prosperous, inclusive, and accountable Nigeria remains within reach.
