Chad has announced that it will abolish entry visa requirements for citizens of all African countries, in a move aimed at deepening continental integration and facilitating easier travel across Africa. The new policy is scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2027.
President Mahamat Idriss Déby made the announcement, stating that the decision reflects Chad’s commitment to African unity and stronger cooperation among countries on the continent. He explained that removing visa restrictions for African nationals would contribute to making the long-envisioned free movement of people and goods within Africa more practical and achievable.
According to the Chadian leader, the policy is intended to encourage closer economic, social and cultural ties among African nations. By easing travel procedures, Chad hopes to promote trade, tourism, investment and people-to-people exchanges, while also supporting broader regional development objectives.
The decision places Chad among a growing number of African countries that have adopted visa-free entry policies for fellow Africans. With the implementation of the new measure, Chad will become the eighth African country to grant visa-free access to citizens of all African states.
Countries that have already introduced similar continent-wide visa-free arrangements include Benin Republic, The Gambia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Ghana, Kenya and Togo. These countries have been cited as examples of efforts to reduce barriers to mobility and strengthen intra-African connections.
Togo was among the most recent countries to adopt such a policy. In May, the Togolese government announced that African nationals holding valid passports could enter the country without obtaining a visa and remain for up to 30 days. The policy was welcomed by many observers as a positive step toward improving mobility within West Africa and across the continent.
Chad’s announcement is expected to reinforce ongoing continental initiatives aimed at promoting regional integration. Analysts say easier movement across borders could support the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by facilitating business travel, trade partnerships and labour mobility among member states.
The move may also enhance Chad’s attractiveness as a destination for tourism and investment by simplifying entry procedures for visitors from across Africa. Supporters argue that visa liberalisation can help stimulate economic activity, increase cross-border commerce and foster greater mutual understanding among African peoples.
Although implementation details are yet to be fully outlined, the announcement has already generated significant interest across the continent. If successfully implemented, the policy would mark a major shift in Chad’s immigration framework and align the country more closely with the broader African agenda of free movement and continental integration.
The decision underscores a growing recognition among African governments that reducing travel restrictions can play an important role in strengthening unity, boosting economic cooperation and advancing the vision of a more interconnected Africa. As the January 2027 implementation date approaches, attention is expected to focus on how Chad operationalises the policy and the impact it may have on regional mobility and integration efforts.
