The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja to mark 100 days to the 2027 General Election.
The event is expected to provide the commission with an opportunity to update Nigerians and key participants in the electoral process on its level of preparedness for the elections.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the commission will provide updates on critical aspects of the electoral process, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures being implemented to protect the credibility and integrity of the elections.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, to mark 100 days to the 2027 General Election,” the statement said.
The commission said the meeting would also serve as a platform for direct engagement with major stakeholders whose participation is considered essential to the successful conduct of the elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, is expected to address the gathering alongside other key stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
The commission said the stakeholders’ meeting was designed to demonstrate its commitment to transparency, proactive communication and collaboration with various actors within Nigeria’s electoral ecosystem.
“The national stakeholders’ meeting underlines the Commission’s commitment to absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem,” INEC stated.
Those expected at the meeting include leaders of registered political parties, security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations and election observer groups.
Also expected are representatives of disability rights organisations, religious and traditional institutions, youth organisations and senior media executives.
The broad representation is intended to ensure that different groups with an interest in the 2027 elections have an opportunity to engage with the electoral commission as preparations intensify.
The event comes at a crucial stage of the electoral calendar, with the 2027 general elections less than four months away.
INEC’s timetable provides for the presidential and National Assembly elections to hold on February 20, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
The commission has been implementing its electoral timetable, which includes party primaries, nomination of candidates and other pre-election activities required under the legal framework governing the elections.
The October 6 engagement is therefore expected to provide greater clarity on the progress made so far and the challenges that may require attention ahead of the polls.
Since assuming office as INEC Chairman in October 2025, Amupitan has repeatedly emphasised the commission’s responsibility to conduct elections that are free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive.
With the countdown now reaching the 100-day mark, pressure is expected to increase on INEC and other institutions involved in the electoral process to ensure that outstanding preparations are completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting will be held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
Proceedings are scheduled to commence at 10am, with invited participants expected to be seated before the start of the programme.
INEC said attendance would be strictly by invitation. Accredited media representatives and other invited guests will be required to present their invitation cards or accreditation badges at designated security checkpoints.
The commission also announced that the event would be broadcast live on major national television networks and streamed through its official social media platforms.
The meeting is expected to provide an important avenue for INEC to communicate its preparedness directly to political parties, security agencies, civil society groups, the media and other stakeholders as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
