Actress Ruth Kadiri Speaks Against Pressure for Big Weddings, Financial Success
Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri-Ezerika has spoken against the pressure couples face to organise elaborate weddings, arguing that the financial and social expectations surrounding such ceremonies can put unnecessary strain on marriages.

The actress said some marriages struggle because couples place too much emphasis on having big weddings instead of focusing on building a stable and lasting relationship.

According to her, couples are often expected to organise several ceremonies, including engagement parties, traditional weddings, court weddings and church weddings. She argued that the demands associated with these events can create avoidable pressure on couples.

Kadiri maintained that young people should feel free to opt for simple, intimate ceremonies attended by a few close family members rather than spend heavily to satisfy societal expectations.

Speaking from her personal experience, the actress said she had a modest wedding and remained married seven years later. She contrasted her experience with cases in which couples who held elaborate weddings reportedly separated within a few months.

Kadiri attributed the success of her marriage, in part, to the decision to keep her wedding small, noting that her career has not prevented her from maintaining her relationship.

She also raised concerns about what she described as spiritual interference during wedding ceremonies, suggesting that some couples experience infertility because of spiritual harm allegedly inflicted on them during elaborate weddings.

However, the claim about infertility was not supported by medical evidence in the account of her remarks. Infertility is a medical condition that can affect either partner and may result from various reproductive health factors.

Beyond marriage, Kadiri criticised the pressure society places on people to achieve financial success, particularly firstborn children, who are often expected to provide for their families.

She called on parents to stop placing excessive financial expectations on their children or pressuring them to become wealthy and start sending money home before they are ready.

The actress argued that individuals should be allowed to define success according to their personal circumstances, priorities and aspirations, rather than being judged by their income or material possessions.

She noted that, for some people, a fulfilling life could mean having the freedom to rest, spend time with their children and enjoy family life without being compelled to pursue demanding work solely to meet other people’s expectations.

Kadiri said society needed to reconsider its definition of success, warning that the relentless pressure to achieve financial milestones was causing harm to many people.

Her comments have drawn attention to broader conversations about wedding expenses, marital expectations, family responsibilities and the growing pressure on young people to achieve financial independence.

The actress’s position underscores the importance of allowing couples and individuals to make decisions based on their means and priorities, rather than conforming to social expectations that may place unnecessary strain on their finances, relationships and well-being.
