Widespread outrage has erupted following the alleged killing of a Nigerian national, Chika Ibe, during a police operation conducted by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town, South Africa.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday at Parksig Villas in the Bellville area of Cape Town, has sparked condemnation from members of the Nigerian community and human rights advocates, with growing calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
The development comes against the backdrop of recurring xenophobic attacks and growing concerns over the treatment of African immigrants in South Africa, where foreign nationals have repeatedly reported harassment, violence and discrimination.
According to reports, Mr Ibe died during a police operation carried out by SAPS officers at the residential complex. While South African authorities are yet to issue an official account of the incident, members of the Nigerian community have alleged that the deceased was subjected to excessive force while in police custody.
Public attention intensified after a video showing Mr Ibe’s body being carried into a police vehicle in a body bag surfaced on social media on Friday.
The footage, which has since gone viral, captured an emotional eyewitness expressing grief and anger over the incident while accusing the officers of ending the Nigerian’s life unnecessarily.
In the video, the unidentified narrator questioned the circumstances that led to Mr Ibe’s death.
“Your African brother, see where you people end his life. End his life in plastic for what? Is it hatred? Look at him. Let’s clap for you guys, thank you very much. The mission is finished,” the voice said.
The emotional recording has generated widespread reactions across social media platforms, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the deceased and calling on both the Nigerian and South African governments to intervene.
At the time of filing this report, the South African Police Service had not issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the operation or responding to allegations made by members of the Nigerian community.
Similarly, there has been no official confirmation from South African authorities regarding the cause of death.
The silence from law enforcement authorities has further fuelled public concern, particularly given the history of xenophobic violence in South Africa that has disproportionately affected African migrants, including Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Ethiopians, Somalis and other foreign nationals.
Over the years, repeated attacks targeting foreign-owned businesses and immigrant communities have resulted in numerous deaths, injuries and the displacement of thousands of people.
Reacting to the latest incident, the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) strongly condemned the alleged killing and demanded an immediate, transparent and independent investigation.
In a statement issued by its President, Frank Onyekwelu, the association identified the deceased as Mr Chika Ibe, a native of Lokpaukwu in Abia State, Nigeria.
According to Onyekwelu, information available to the association suggests that Mr Ibe died after allegedly suffering severe physical abuse while in the custody of law enforcement officers.
“Mr Chika Ibe, who hailed from Lokpaukwu, Abia State, Nigeria, reportedly died after being subjected to severe beating, torture, inhuman treatment, and alleged suffocation during a police operation,” Onyekwelu stated.
He described the allegations as deeply disturbing, warning that if established through investigation, they would amount to serious violations of internationally recognised human rights standards.
“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” he added.
NICASA urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), South Africa’s police oversight body, to immediately commence an impartial inquiry into the incident.
The association also called on the leadership of the South African Police Service to cooperate fully with investigators and ensure that every officer involved is held accountable if found culpable.
“NICASA calls on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the leadership of SAPS to immediately institute an independent, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into this incident,” Onyekwelu said.
He insisted that accountability must prevail regardless of the status of those involved.
“Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life,” he stressed.
The association further appealed to the Nigerian diplomatic mission in South Africa to closely monitor developments surrounding the case and ensure that the rights of the deceased and his family are protected throughout the investigative process.
It also called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels to ensure justice is served.
The incident has once again drawn attention to longstanding concerns over allegations of police brutality and xenophobia in South Africa, particularly against African migrants.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly called on South African authorities to strengthen measures aimed at protecting immigrants from violence and ensuring accountability for abuses committed by security personnel.
Observers say the latest incident risks further straining relations between Nigerian nationals living in South Africa and local law enforcement agencies unless the circumstances surrounding Mr Ibe’s death are thoroughly investigated and transparently addressed.
As public pressure mounts, many Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora continue to demand justice for Chika Ibe, insisting that a credible investigation is essential to establish the facts, determine responsibility and reassure immigrant communities that the rule of law will be upheld.
