Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Thursday hosted a grand royal banquet in honour of the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, as the revered monarch marked his 85th birthday anniversary.

The colourful celebration, held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, clergy, captains of industry, academics, and prominent personalities from across Nigeria who gathered to celebrate the Onitsha monarch’s remarkable life, leadership and contributions to society.

Speaking during the event, Governor Otti described the Obi of Onitsha, fondly called Agbogidi, as a symbol of excellence, wisdom, humility and selfless service whose life has continued to inspire generations across Nigeria and beyond.

According to the governor, the celebration was not merely about age, but about honouring a man whose life journey embodies discipline, dignity, integrity and purposeful leadership.

“Yesterday was an evening of celebration as we honoured His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha (Agbogidi) CFR, on his 85th birthday at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia,” Otti stated.

“We gathered to celebrate a man of excellence, a gentleman of grace, wisdom, and selflessness.”

The governor praised the educational and professional accomplishments of the monarch, describing his academic background as both exceptional and inspirational.

He noted that the Obi of Onitsha distinguished himself academically by attending some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including Stanford University and Columbia University, where he obtained his first and second degrees respectively.

Governor Otti further highlighted the monarch’s successful career in the private sector before ascending the throne, saying he had earned widespread respect as a business leader and one of Nigeria’s notable captains of industry.

“Agbogidi is a blessed man whose educational journey is rare and remarkable, having studied at Stanford University and Columbia University for his first and second degrees respectively,” he said.

“He has also built a flourishing career in the private sector and distinguished himself as a business leader and captain of industry in Nigeria.”

The governor also spoke emotionally about his personal relationship with the traditional ruler, revealing that their bond began many years ago after their first meeting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

According to Otti, the Obi of Onitsha has remained a father figure and mentor in his life, especially during his political journey.

“I first met him years ago in Ikoyi, and since then he has been my adopted dad,” the governor said.

“Everyone needs someone they look up to in life.”

Governor Otti disclosed that the monarch’s endorsement played a significant role in his eventual emergence as governor, noting that the Obi’s support was neither automatic nor easily earned.

“When I decided to run for public office, his endorsement, though not easily won, made all the difference and we are here now,” he added.

The Abia governor also explained why Umuahia was chosen as the venue for the celebration despite the monarch being from Onitsha in neighbouring Anambra State.

According to him, the decision reflected the shared cultural heritage and unity among the people of the South-East region.

“There was no better place to celebrate him than Umuahia even though he’s from Onitsha, a reminder that we are one and the same people,” Otti stated.

He said the event also reflected the vision of an inclusive and united Abia State where people from different backgrounds are welcomed and valued.

“This is the Abia we are building: united, dignified, inclusive, and forward-looking,” he said.

Governor Otti pointed to Aba, Abia’s commercial hub, as an example of the cosmopolitan spirit he hopes to strengthen across the state.

“Aba, our great city, also reflects that cosmopolitan spirit where people from all corners of Nigeria converge,” he added.

The governor described the Obi of Onitsha as a man whose life and achievements prove that honour, respect and celebration naturally follow a life built on integrity and hard work.

According to him, the monarch’s legacy should serve as an important lesson for younger generations.

“Agbogidi truly deserves this honour. His life is a testament that when you live well, you will be celebrated,” he stated.

“This is the legacy we must hand down to our young people: to embrace hard work, diligence, and values that endure.”

Governor Otti also appreciated guests and dignitaries whose presence added prestige and cultural significance to the event.

He specifically thanked Pastor Chinedu Ezekwesili, his wife and former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, alongside other religious leaders and traditional rulers from across the country for honouring the celebration.

“Special thanks to Pastor Chinedu Ezekwesili, his wife Dr. (Mrs.) Oby Ezekwesili, other men of God, and the traditional leaders from Onitsha and across the country, alongside our host traditional leaders, whose presence added depth and cultural richness to the celebration,” he said.

The governor concluded by praying for continued strength, wisdom and long life for the monarch, whom he described as a global symbol of responsible leadership and cultural excellence.

“Your Majesty, we thank God for your life and for all you have been to ndị Onitsha, the Southeast, Nigeria, Africa, and the world,” Otti said.

“May God continue to bless you with wisdom, longevity, and good health.”

He added, “Happy 85th birthday, Agbogidi.”
