The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that elections into the 27 local government councils in the state will be conducted on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
Chairman of the Commission, Chief Charles Ejiogu, disclosed the date in a statement dated September 11, 2026, notifying political parties, electoral stakeholders and members of the public of the scheduled local government polls.
According to Ejiogu, the election will cover the chairmanship positions in all 27 local government areas as well as the 305 ward councillorship positions across the state.
The elections, he said, would be conducted in 4,758 polling units spread across Imo State.
The statement was addressed particularly to all registered political parties, which the Commission urged to take note of the election date and make the necessary preparations ahead of the exercise.
The statement titled “Re: Imo State 2026 Local Government Council Elections” read in part: “This is to inform the critical stakeholders, particularly, all registered Political Parties and the general public that elections into the Offices of the 27 LGAs Council Chairmen and 305 Ward Councillors, will hold on Saturday 26th September, 2026 in the 4,758 polling units across Imo State.”
Ejiogu further referenced the Commission’s earlier notice of election issued on September 18, 2025, which provided the statutory 360-day notice for the conduct of the local government elections.
He said the notice was issued pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
“Therefore, all registered Political Parties are hereby requested to take note and do the needful, as the Commission’s 18th September, 2025 ‘360 days’ NOTICE OF ELECTION’ pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended refers,” the statement said.
The Commission also disclosed that consultations with critical stakeholders were ongoing as part of preparations for the elections.
“In view of the foregoing, consultation with critical Stakeholders is on-going,” Ejiogu stated.
The announcement formally sets the electoral process in motion for the election of local government political office holders across Imo State.
The 27 chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats represent a significant number of elective positions at the grassroots level, where elected officials are expected to oversee local administration and represent communities within their respective wards and local government areas.
The Commission’s notice also places responsibility on political parties and candidates to comply with the applicable electoral timetable, regulations and requirements ahead of the September 26 exercise.
With consultations still ongoing, stakeholders are expected to continue engaging with the Commission on arrangements for the polls, including issues relating to election logistics, party participation and other aspects of the electoral process.
The announcement comes as political parties and prospective candidates prepare for what will be a major grassroots political contest across the state.
The Commission is expected to provide further details on the electoral process as preparations progress, while political parties are expected to mobilise their structures and complete the necessary requirements ahead of election day.
The September 26 date therefore marks the scheduled day for Imo State voters to elect chairmen for the 27 local government areas and councillors representing the state’s 305 wards.
