Atiku’s Son, Adamu, Declares for Adamawa South Senate Seat on ADC Platform

Adamu Atiku has officially declared his intention to contest for the Adamawa South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major political move ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Adamu, who previously served as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, announced his senatorial ambition in a statement issued on Friday, saying his decision followed months of consultations with political stakeholders, supporters, community leaders, and residents across the senatorial district.

According to him, the growing calls from constituents and supporters convinced him to step forward and seek elective office in order to provide what he described as purposeful and people-oriented representation for the people of Adamawa South.

“After months of wide consultations, sincere reflections, and encouragement from constituents, stakeholders, supporters, and well-meaning citizens across Adamawa South, I have decided to answer the call to serve and formally join the race for the Adamawa South Senatorial seat,” he said.

The declaration marks Adamu’s first major move toward elective office at the federal legislative level and further strengthens the political influence of the Atiku political family within the ADC.

Political observers believe the development could reshape the political landscape in Adamawa State, especially within the opposition bloc preparing for the 2027 elections.

Adamu stated that although supporters had mounted pressure on him to publicly declare his ambition earlier, he deliberately remained silent while engaging in consultations and deep reflection over the responsibility attached to public office.

According to him, leadership must be rooted in sincerity, preparation, and commitment to the welfare of the people rather than personal ambition.

He said the overwhelming support he received from constituents across the district gave him confidence to formally join the race.

“The overwhelming confidence reposed in me and the consistent demand for purposeful, experienced, and people-oriented representation have been truly humbling,” he stated.

The former commissioner also disclosed that he had officially obtained his nomination form, describing the move as the formal beginning of his journey toward representing Adamawa South in the Senate.

“Yesterday, I officially acquired my nomination form, marking the formal beginning of this journey and my commitment to offering myself for service to the good people of Adamawa South,” he added.

Adamu described his ambition as more than an individual political project, insisting that it represents a collective movement driven by the desire for better governance, unity, development, and inclusive representation across the senatorial district.

According to him, the movement is built on shared aspirations for progress and effective leadership capable of addressing the needs of the people.

“This movement belongs to the people and is driven by our shared desire for purposeful representation, unity, and progress across Adamawa South,” he said.

“The journey has begun, and with the support of our people, we shall move forward together with unity, purpose, and determination.”

The declaration comes amid increasing political realignments in Adamawa State following the recent defection of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adamu had resigned from Governor Fintiri’s cabinet shortly after the governor’s political move, fueling speculation that he was preparing for a fresh political direction aligned with the ADC and the broader coalition around his father, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The latest development also underscores the growing role of the Atiku political family within the ADC following the former vice president’s decision to align with the party amid ongoing political restructuring ahead of 2027.

Analysts believe Adamu’s entry into the senatorial race may significantly alter political calculations within Adamawa South, a district considered one of the most politically strategic zones in the state.

Supporters of the former commissioner have already begun mobilizing across communities, with many describing him as a youthful and experienced politician capable of bringing fresh energy and developmental focus to the National Assembly.

Some political stakeholders within the district argued that his background in governance, infrastructure, and energy development positions him as a strong contender for the Senate seat.

During his tenure as commissioner, Adamu was involved in several state infrastructure and development projects, particularly within the works and energy sectors.

His supporters claim those experiences have equipped him with practical knowledge of governance and policy implementation needed for effective legislative representation.

Meanwhile, political observers say the ADC may continue to gain momentum in parts of northern Nigeria as more influential politicians and political families reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party has recently attracted several prominent figures amid internal crises and realignments affecting major political parties across the country.

In Adamawa State, the battle for political dominance ahead of 2027 is expected to intensify in the coming months as parties begin consultations, coalition-building, and grassroots mobilization.

Adamu’s declaration has already generated reactions within political circles, with many viewing the move as part of a broader strategy to consolidate the ADC’s presence in the North-East.

While other aspirants are also expected to join the race, political analysts believe the Atiku name and political structure could play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the contest.

For now, Adamu says his focus remains on engaging constituents and building a movement centered on service, unity, and development.

He urged the people of Adamawa South to support what he described as a collective mission aimed at strengthening representation and improving the lives of ordinary citizens across the district.
