The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Nsikak Kingsley, for allegedly causing the death of his biological father, Adone Peter, following a violent altercation in Oda Community, Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, reportedly occurred on May 28, 2026, and has reignited concerns about the growing incidence of domestic violence and family-related crimes across the country.
The arrest was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in an official statement released on Thursday. According to the police spokesperson, the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death.
DSP Jimoh stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, had directed a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure that justice is served.
“The Ondo State Police Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has arrested a 38-year-old man identified as Nsikak Kingsley for his alleged involvement in the death of his biological father, Adone Peter, aged 65 years,” the statement said.
The police noted that the unfortunate event occurred in Oda Community, a suburb of Akure, and has generated widespread concern and condemnation among residents who were shocked by the allegations.
According to preliminary findings by investigators, the suspect and his father became involved in a heated argument that later escalated into a physical confrontation. During the altercation, Kingsley allegedly assaulted his father, inflicting severe injuries on him, particularly to the head.
Investigators believe the violence intensified beyond what witnesses initially expected, leaving the elderly man critically injured.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that on May 28, 2026, the suspect allegedly engaged his father in a violent altercation which escalated into a physical assault. During the confrontation, the deceased reportedly sustained severe injuries, especially to the head,” Jimoh explained.
Following the attack, family members and concerned residents reportedly rushed the 65-year-old victim to a medical facility for urgent treatment. Medical personnel immediately attended to him in an effort to save his life.
However, despite the intervention of healthcare workers and attempts to stabilize his condition, the injuries proved fatal.
“Sadly, despite efforts by medical personnel, the attending doctor confirmed him dead while receiving treatment,” the police spokesman added.
The tragedy has left many residents of Oda Community in disbelief, with community members expressing sadness over the loss of a respected elder under such disturbing circumstances.
Police authorities disclosed that the suspect’s arrest was made possible after another member of the family reported the incident to law enforcement authorities.
According to the statement, the deceased’s other son, who is the suspect’s brother, lodged a formal complaint at a nearby police station shortly after the incident. Acting on the report, police operatives immediately launched an investigation and moved swiftly to apprehend the suspect.
The command praised the prompt action of the complainant, noting that timely reporting played a crucial role in ensuring the suspect was taken into custody without delay.
Following his arrest, Kingsley was detained for questioning while detectives commenced a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing.
Police sources indicated that investigators are gathering statements from family members, neighbours, and other potential witnesses to determine exactly what transpired before the fatal confrontation.
Authorities also said they are awaiting the outcome of further forensic and medical examinations that could provide additional details regarding the injuries sustained by the deceased.
The Commissioner of Police assured residents that the command remains committed to ensuring justice and maintaining law and order throughout the state.
He urged members of the public to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes and avoid resorting to violence, particularly within family settings where disagreements can often be managed through dialogue and mediation.
The incident has sparked conversations among residents and social commentators about the increasing number of domestic disputes that end in violence across Nigeria.
Cases involving children allegedly attacking or killing their parents, though relatively rare, have become a source of concern for law enforcement agencies and family advocacy groups.
Observers argue that economic hardship, mental health challenges, substance abuse, and unresolved family tensions are among factors contributing to the rise in domestic conflicts.
The Ondo incident comes barely two years after a similar tragedy occurred in Lagos State. In 2024, the Lagos State Police Command arrested a 25-year-old man, Chibunnma Chimelie, who allegedly stabbed his 68-year-old father to death in the Isolo area of the state.
That incident also generated widespread public outrage and renewed calls for stronger family support systems, counselling services, and conflict-resolution mechanisms.
Community leaders in Oda have appealed for calm while urging residents not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the case until investigations are concluded.
They also called on families to prioritize communication and seek professional intervention whenever disputes threaten to escalate into violence.
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command has assured the public that the case will be prosecuted in accordance with the law once investigations are completed.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that anyone found culpable for criminal acts faces the full weight of the law.
As investigations continue, residents of Oda Community and many Nigerians are left mourning the tragic death of Adone Peter, a 65-year-old father whose life ended under circumstances that have once again highlighted the devastating consequences of unresolved family conflicts and violence within the home.
