The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has ordered an immediate investigation into an alleged case of sexual misconduct involving a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts.
The development followed the emergence of videos on social media showing some students allegedly assaulting and manhandling the lecturer within the university premises on Saturday, August 15, 2026, after he was reportedly accused of attempting to sexually molest a female student.
The incident has generated widespread reactions online, with members of the public calling on the university authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation.
While the university has confirmed that an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student was made against the lecturer, it has not disclosed the identity of the lecturer or confirmed the substance of the allegation.
The university management, however, strongly condemned the reported assault, stressing that allegations of misconduct must be addressed through established institutional procedures rather than violence or self-help.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Information and Public Relations of the university, Aloysius Attah, said the institution had received reports concerning the alleged physical attack on the lecturer following the accusation.
According to Attah, videos of the incident had circulated widely on social media, prompting the university management to intervene and activate its investigative and administrative mechanisms.
He said the management was “deeply saddened” by the incident and rejected any attempt to resort to jungle justice within the university community.
The statement said, “The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has received reports of the alleged physical assault and attack on a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student of the University.”
It added that the incident occurred within the university environment on Saturday and that videos from the scene had subsequently gone viral on various social media platforms.
The management emphasised that while allegations of sexual misconduct were treated seriously, no member of the university community had the right to take the law into their own hands.
The university also reaffirmed its position against sexual harassment, sexual misconduct and other forms of inappropriate behaviour.
Attah said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, had consistently maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and related violations within the institution.
“At the same time, Management emphasises that allegations of misconduct must be handled through established institutional procedures and due process. No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment,” the statement said.
The university management consequently directed that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation be conducted to determine exactly what transpired.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the allegation, the events surrounding the confrontation between the students and the lecturer, and whether any form of misconduct occurred.
The institution said the matter was already under review and that appropriate administrative processes had been activated to ensure that all parties received fair and objective treatment.
The development has also renewed discussions about the need for universities to provide safe and effective mechanisms through which students can report allegations of sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct without fear of retaliation.
