The management of Abia State University (ABSU) has suspended the Head of the Department of Anatomy, Dr. Agbai Johnson Ukwa, as the Abia State Government intensifies investigations into allegations of academic misconduct within the institution.
The suspension, which took effect on Wednesday, is part of an ongoing effort by the university authorities and the state government to examine allegations bordering on examination malpractice, grade manipulation and other irregularities said to have occurred within the institution.
Although the university has yet to release a detailed official statement outlining the specific reasons for the disciplinary action, sources familiar with the investigation said the suspension was intended to allow investigators to carry out their work without interference.
According to information emerging from the ongoing probe, investigators are examining allegations that Dr. Ukwa was involved in grade manipulation, popularly referred to as “sorting,” as well as other alleged academic irregularities.
Among the allegations under investigation are claims that students in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme were allegedly asked to pay substantial sums of money in exchange for favourable examination outcomes. Some reports allege that payments of up to ₦1.5 million were demanded from students seeking to pass professional examinations. However, these allegations have not been proven in court, and no official findings have yet been released by the authorities.
As part of the wider investigation, the Abia State Government has reportedly commenced a comprehensive audit of students’ academic records across the university.
The exercise is said to involve a detailed review of examination scripts, mark sheets, grading records and other academic documents covering a period of approximately five years.
The objective of the review is to determine whether there were irregularities in the processing of examination results and to identify any instances where academic standards may have been compromised.
Sources close to the investigation indicated that the review extends beyond a single department and is expected to cover multiple faculties where necessary.
Officials involved in the exercise are reportedly scrutinising records to establish whether examination results were legitimately awarded or improperly altered.
If evidence of academic misconduct is established, authorities may take disciplinary measures against those found culpable in accordance with the university’s regulations and applicable laws.
The investigation could also have implications for former students whose academic records may be found to have been improperly processed.
According to sources, authorities are considering appropriate actions where evidence indicates that certificates or examination results were obtained through fraudulent or irregular means.
However, no final decision has been announced, and officials have stressed that all findings will be based on documentary evidence and due process.
