Peter Obi Meets ECFR Africa Director, Advocates Stronger Global Partnerships for Africa

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has continued his international engagements aimed at promoting Africa’s development and strengthening Nigeria’s role in global affairs.

Obi disclosed that he held a productive meeting in London on June 10 with Alex Vines, Director of the Africa Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), as part of a series of engagements focused on deepening knowledge, building strategic relationships, and advancing conversations on Africa’s future.

According to Obi, the discussions centred on Africa’s growing importance in the international system and the need for stronger partnerships between African nations and the global community. He emphasized that the continent should no longer be viewed merely through the lens of humanitarian challenges, poverty statistics, or development concerns.

Instead, he argued that Africa must be recognised as a serious and equal partner in shaping the future global order, similar to the role being played by emerging powers such as India, Indonesia, and other rapidly developing regions of the world.

During the meeting, both parties examined ways of fostering deeper cooperation in critical areas, including trade, governance, innovation, investment, and sustainable development. They also discussed the importance of creating stronger platforms for dialogue that would enable African countries to participate more actively in global decision-making processes.

Obi noted that the conversation reinforced the need for Africa, particularly Nigeria, to occupy a more prominent position in international discussions and partnerships. He stressed that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, has a strategic role to play in advancing the continent’s interests on the global stage.

According to him, meaningful engagement between Africa and international partners must be built on mutual respect, shared interests, and a commitment to sustainable progress. He argued that stronger relationships founded on trust and collaboration would create opportunities for economic growth, technological advancement, and improved governance across the continent.

The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the importance of constructive dialogue in addressing global challenges and unlocking opportunities for development. He maintained that sustained engagement between African leaders, policymakers, and international institutions remains essential for achieving long-term prosperity and stability.

Obi said his meeting with Vines formed part of his broader efforts to gain insights, exchange ideas, and contribute to discussions that could positively impact Nigeria and Africa. He reiterated his belief that the continent possesses enormous potential and should be positioned as a key stakeholder in shaping the future of the global economy and international relations.

Reflecting on the engagement, Obi expressed optimism about the possibilities that could emerge from stronger cooperation between Africa and the international community.

He concluded by restating his vision for national transformation, affirming that with the right leadership, strategic partnerships, and commitment to development, Nigeria can achieve greater progress and take its rightful place among the world’s leading nations.

“A New Nigeria is Possible,” Obi stated.
