The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a TikTok user identified as Mirabel following investigations into her viral allegation that she was raped and assaulted by an unidentified man. Authorities say findings from their inquiry revealed significant inconsistencies in her account, leading to her detention on multiple charges.
Mirabel had earlier taken to social media to allege that she was attacked, raped, and cut with a blade by an unknown assailant. The claims quickly gained traction online, drawing sympathy from members of the public and sparking widespread concern. However, police officials say a thorough investigation failed to substantiate the allegations.
According to the police, preliminary inquiries raised doubts about the credibility of the claim. Neighbours interviewed during the investigation reportedly stated that they neither heard screams for help nor observed any signs of forced entry or disturbance in the vicinity at the time the alleged incident was said to have occurred.
In addition, investigators examined phone records and text message exchanges linked to the case. Authorities say the digital evidence did not corroborate Mirabel’s narrative of events. Law enforcement officials also disclosed that she gave conflicting statements during questioning, further complicating efforts to establish the facts.
Police sources stated that Mirabel was offered full medical and forensic examinations, including procedures that could help confirm whether a sexual assault had occurred. According to the authorities, these services were made available through both official channels and support from relevant non-governmental organisations. However, she allegedly declined to complete the examinations.
Based on the outcome of the investigation, Mirabel was detained for allegedly providing false information, wasting police resources, and attempting to pervert the course of justice. The Ogun State Police Command emphasized that fabricating allegations of such gravity is a serious offence with legal consequences.
The case has also generated reactions across social media platforms, where Mirabel’s initial claims had drawn significant engagement. Following her arrest, her TikTok account was reportedly set to private, and several of her previously posted videos have been deleted. There are also reports that individuals who made financial donations to support her are now demanding refunds.
While investigations remain ongoing, the police have used the case to reiterate the importance of responsible reporting and truthful engagement with law enforcement agencies. Authorities stressed that false allegations can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the accused but also for genuine survivors of sexual violence.
Officials noted that unfounded claims undermine public trust and may discourage victims from coming forward. They warned that making false accusations diverts critical resources from real cases and complicates efforts to combat gender-based violence effectively.
At the same time, advocacy groups continue to emphasize the need for careful handling of sexual assault reports to ensure that legitimate complaints are thoroughly and sensitively investigated. Legal experts point out that while false reporting is punishable under the law, authorities must balance enforcement with the broader objective of encouraging survivors to seek justice without fear of dismissal or intimidation.
The Ogun State Police Command has not yet disclosed whether formal charges have been filed in court but confirmed that due process will be followed in accordance with the law.
As the investigation continues, officials maintain that the integrity of the justice system depends on truthful reporting and responsible conduct. They have urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to allow the legal process to take its course.
The case serves as a reminder of the serious legal and social implications surrounding allegations of sexual assault. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to prosecuting genuine offenders while also taking firm action against individuals found to have deliberately misled the public or law enforcement.
Police concluded by stressing that both justice for survivors and accountability for false claims remain essential to maintaining confidence in the system.
