Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, describing him as a man whose life was defined by unwavering faith, humility, and a deep commitment to service.
Obi made the remarks after attending the funeral ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, where dignitaries, religious leaders, and admirers from across Nigeria gathered to honour the respected cleric.
Reflecting on the event, Obi described the gathering as both solemn and uplifting, noting that it brought together people from diverse backgrounds who had been touched in one way or another by the life and ministry of Rev. Ukpai. According to him, the atmosphere was one of reflection, gratitude, and quiet celebration of a life that had left a lasting imprint on countless individuals and communities.
He emphasised that Rev. Ukpai was not just a preacher who spoke about faith, but someone who lived it daily through his actions and interactions with others. In Obi’s words, the late cleric embodied the very message he preached—demonstrating compassion, humility, and a steadfast commitment to serving God and humanity.
Throughout his lifetime, Rev. Ukpai built a reputation as a spiritual leader who went beyond the pulpit. His ministry, which spanned several decades, was marked by a consistent effort to uplift lives, strengthen families, and guide individuals toward a more purposeful and morally grounded existence.

Obi noted that the impact of Rev. Ukpai’s work could be seen in the countless testimonies of transformed lives, healed relationships, and renewed hope among those who encountered him. He described the late evangelist as a man who devoted himself entirely to the service of others, often placing the needs of people above his own.
“He was a living example of faith in action,” Obi said, adding that Rev. Ukpai’s life demonstrated the power of genuine commitment to spiritual values. According to him, the cleric’s legacy goes beyond sermons and public appearances—it is reflected in the lives he changed and the values he instilled in those who followed his teachings.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the enduring relevance of Rev. Ukpai’s message, noting that in a time when society faces numerous moral and social challenges, the example set by the late cleric serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity, compassion, and selfless service.
He pointed out that Rev. Ukpai’s approach to ministry was deeply rooted in the belief that faith should be practical and transformative. Rather than limiting his work to religious gatherings, the evangelist was known for engaging with communities, offering guidance, and supporting initiatives that promoted social and moral development.
For many who attended the funeral, the event was not only a moment of mourning but also an opportunity to celebrate a life that had been lived with purpose. The large turnout reflected the wide reach of Rev. Ukpai’s influence, cutting across regions, denominations, and social groups.
Obi expressed gratitude to God for what he described as a “life well spent,” acknowledging that while the loss is deeply felt, there is comfort in knowing that Rev. Ukpai fulfilled his calling and left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
He noted that the seeds of faith planted by the late cleric would not be lost, but would continue to grow and bear fruit in the lives of those he mentored and influenced. According to him, this enduring impact is the true measure of a life dedicated to service.
In his tribute, Obi also reflected on the importance of remembering and honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to society, particularly in the area of spiritual and moral development. He said such figures play a crucial role in shaping values and guiding communities toward a more just and compassionate society.
As the ceremony drew to a close, there was a shared sense among attendees that while Rev. Ukpai’s physical presence is no longer with them, his spirit and teachings will continue to live on. The stories shared, the prayers offered, and the reflections made all pointed to a legacy that transcends time.
Obi concluded his message with a prayer for the repose of the cleric’s soul, asking that he find eternal peace after a lifetime of dedication and service.
“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” he said.
For many Nigerians, the passing of Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a renewed commitment to the values he stood for—faith, service, humility, and love for humanity.
