The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has called on young people across the state to consider joining the Nigerian Army, describing military service as both a patriotic duty and a pathway to personal development, national unity, and long-term career opportunities.
Governor Mbah made the appeal during a public engagement with youth groups and community leaders, where he emphasised the critical role young Nigerians must play in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and addressing growing security challenges.
He noted that Nigeria is currently facing complex security threats, including insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violent crime, which require the active participation of disciplined and committed citizens. According to him, the Nigerian Army remains a key institution in preserving national stability, and the involvement of educated, motivated youths is essential to strengthening its capacity.
“Our youths must begin to see military service not just as a job, but as a noble responsibility to defend our nation and protect our people,” Mbah said. “The Nigerian Army offers opportunities for growth, discipline, leadership, and service to humanity.”
The governor stressed that beyond national service, joining the army provides structured career paths, professional training, and exposure to advanced skills that can benefit individuals even beyond their time in uniform. He highlighted areas such as engineering, medicine, logistics, information technology, and intelligence as fields within the military where young recruits can build valuable expertise.
Mbah also underscored the importance of discipline and character development, noting that the military instills values such as resilience, teamwork, and patriotism—qualities he believes are essential for nation-building.
Addressing concerns often associated with military service, including the risks involved, the governor acknowledged the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces but insisted that such sacrifices are necessary for the collective good of society. He urged youths to rise above fear and contribute meaningfully to securing the nation’s future.
“We must not shy away from responsibility because of fear. Every nation depends on brave men and women who are willing to stand in the gap,” he said.
The governor further called on community leaders, parents, and educational institutions to encourage eligible youths to consider enlistment, stressing that a collective effort is needed to build a strong and capable military force.
He also assured that his administration remains committed to supporting federal security agencies operating within Enugu State, including the Nigerian Army, through collaboration, infrastructure development, and community engagement initiatives aimed at enhancing security.
Mbah’s appeal comes at a time when the Nigerian military is intensifying recruitment efforts to bolster its ranks amid ongoing operations across various parts of the country. The call is also seen as part of broader efforts to engage young people in nation-building and redirect their energies toward productive and meaningful pursuits.
Observers note that increased youth participation in the armed forces could not only strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture but also help address unemployment by providing structured opportunities for skill acquisition and career advancement.
As the security landscape continues to evolve, the governor reiterated that the role of young people remains central to shaping a safer and more stable Nigeria. He encouraged them to embrace the call to service with a sense of purpose and commitment, reminding them that the future of the nation depends largely on their willingness to act.
“The strength of any nation lies in the courage and commitment of its people,” Mbah concluded. “Our youths must rise to the occasion and take their place in building a secure and prosperous Nigeria.”
