Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated the pioneer graduating class of MIVA Open University, describing their achievement as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s educational landscape and a clear demonstration of how technology is expanding access to quality higher education.
Speaking at the maiden convocation ceremony of the university, held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos, the governor said the graduation of the institution’s first set of students represented far more than the conferral of academic degrees. According to him, it marked the successful realization of a bold vision aimed at making university education more accessible, flexible, inclusive, and responsive to the realities of a rapidly changing world.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the ceremony by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, praised the graduates for their resilience, commitment, and determination in embracing a new model of learning that is redefining the future of higher education in Nigeria.
Addressing the graduating students, the governor described them as pioneers whose success has validated the effectiveness of technology-driven learning and demonstrated that academic excellence can thrive beyond the traditional classroom environment.
“You are more than graduates; you are trailblazers,” he said. “Your success has shown that learning can thrive beyond the traditional classroom and that technology can open doors to knowledge and opportunity for countless others. You have demonstrated courage, discipline, and perseverance by embracing a model of education that challenges conventional approaches and expands possibilities for learners everywhere.”
Sanwo-Olu noted that the occasion represented an important milestone not only for the university but also for Nigeria’s broader educational sector. He observed that digital technology is increasingly breaking down barriers that have historically limited access to quality education, including geographical constraints, financial limitations, and rigid academic structures.
The governor commended the founders and leadership of MIVA Open University for their foresight, innovation, and commitment to leveraging technology to democratize access to learning. He said the institution’s rapid growth and success underscore what can be achieved when visionary leadership is matched with purposeful execution and a determination to address contemporary educational challenges.
According to him, the university’s technology-driven approach aligns closely with the Lagos State Government’s broader development agenda, which seeks to build a knowledge-based economy powered by innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, and human capital development.
He explained that the future prosperity of Lagos and Nigeria depends significantly on investments in education, skills acquisition, and technological innovation, adding that institutions such as MIVA are helping to prepare a new generation of graduates equipped to thrive in a digital economy.
“Our vision for Lagos is one that is driven by knowledge, innovation, and human capital. Educational institutions that embrace technology and provide flexible access to quality learning are helping to build the workforce that will drive economic growth and development in the years ahead,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu further highlighted several initiatives implemented by the Lagos State Government to empower young people and enhance their capacity to succeed in an increasingly competitive global environment. These initiatives include Lagos Innovates, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), and the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA), all of which are designed to provide skills development, financial support, leadership training, and entrepreneurial opportunities for youths.
He explained that these programmes reflect the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where young Nigerians can develop their talents, pursue innovation, and contribute meaningfully to society.
The governor urged the graduating students to embrace entrepreneurship, creativity, adaptability, and lifelong learning as they transition into the next phase of their lives and careers. He stressed that success in the modern world requires a willingness to continuously acquire new knowledge and adapt to changing circumstances.
“The future belongs to those who are adaptable, creative, and willing to learn, relearn, and innovate,” he advised. “Rather than waiting for opportunities, be prepared to create them. The world is changing rapidly, and those who succeed will be those who embrace change and see possibilities where others see obstacles.”
He also emphasized the importance of integrity and character, reminding the graduates that academic qualifications alone are not sufficient for lasting success.
“Let integrity guide your decisions because character remains the foundation of enduring success. Your education has equipped you with knowledge and skills, but your values and principles will determine how far you go and the impact you make in society,” he added.
Governor Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to the parents, guardians, lecturers, and support staff whose sacrifices and dedication contributed to the success of the graduating students. He acknowledged the critical role families and educators play in nurturing academic achievement and personal development.
He also encouraged MIVA Open University to continue strengthening its innovative educational model, noting that the future of higher education will increasingly depend on institutions capable of combining quality, accessibility, flexibility, and global relevance.
According to him, universities must continue to evolve in response to technological advancements and changing societal needs if they are to remain relevant in the twenty-first century.
Also speaking at the convocation ceremony, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the maiden graduation ceremony as a significant milestone for both the institution and the Nigerian education sector.
He said the event serves as proof that education is no longer confined to the four walls of a conventional classroom, emphasizing that technology has transformed the way knowledge is delivered and acquired.
According to the minister, MIVA Open University exemplifies the democratization of education by providing learners with flexible access to quality academic programmes without compromising educational standards.
“This institution demonstrates that learning can be accessible, flexible, and effective while maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence,” he stated.
The keynote speaker at the event, the Sarkin Kano, His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, underscored the central role of education in national development. He argued that education should be regarded as a fundamental right rather than a privilege reserved for a select few.
Sanusi warned that societies that fail to provide broad access to education ultimately undermine their own development and future prosperity. He commended MIVA Open University for bringing learning opportunities closer to people regardless of their location or personal circumstances.
He described the university’s model as an effective strategy for expanding educational access and ensuring that more Nigerians can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for personal and national advancement.
The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria also highlighted the importance of girl-child education, describing it as one of the most powerful drivers of sustainable development. According to him, investing in the education of girls produces far-reaching benefits for families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
In his remarks, the Chancellor of MIVA Open University, Mr. Sim Shagaya, expressed optimism about the future of the institution and confidence in the capabilities of its pioneer graduates.
He congratulated the graduating students on their achievements and encouraged them to serve as ambassadors of excellence wherever they find themselves. Shagaya said he believes the graduates will distinguish themselves in their various professions and contribute significantly to national development.
As the university celebrated its first graduating class, the ceremony highlighted the growing role of technology in reshaping higher education and expanding opportunities for learners across Nigeria. For many participants, the event was not only a celebration of academic success but also a glimpse into the future of education—one in which innovation, accessibility, and digital learning play an increasingly central role in empowering the next generation.
