Police Launch Manhunt for Vigilante Member Over Killing, Shooting in Abia Community

The Abia State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a local vigilante member accused of killing his girlfriend, injuring her sister, and shooting another resident in a violent incident that has shocked the Amakama community in Ubakala, within Umuahia South Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as Chinedu Anamelechi, is alleged to have carried out the attack at Umuanga Amakama, leaving one person dead and two others seriously injured.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, said the command received a distress report about the incident and immediately deployed operatives to the scene.

“Upon receipt of the report, officers swiftly mobilised to the area, where they discovered the lifeless body of the deceased in a pool of blood, with visible gunshot wounds,” she said.

The victim, identified as Ezinne Ariwodo, was confirmed dead at the scene by responding authorities. Her remains have since been deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy as part of ongoing investigations.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly shot Ariwodo, who was said to be his girlfriend, during the attack. In addition, he reportedly stabbed her sister and shot another young man from the community before fleeing the scene.

The injured victims were promptly rescued by police operatives and taken to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have not disclosed their identities but confirmed that efforts are ongoing to ensure they receive adequate care.

Police also recovered items from the scene believed to be relevant to the investigation. These exhibits have been taken into custody for forensic analysis as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

The motive behind the incident remains unclear, but preliminary findings suggest a possible domestic dispute that escalated into violence. Investigators are exploring all angles, including the suspect’s relationship with the victims and his activities prior to the incident.

Chinaka assured residents that normalcy has been restored to the affected area, adding that security presence has been reinforced to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

She urged members of the community to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing any useful information that could aid in the arrest of the suspect.

“We appeal to residents not to take the law into their hands. Investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the suspect,” she stated.

The incident has generated tension within the community, with residents expressing concern over the involvement of a vigilante member in such a violent crime. Vigilante groups are typically set up to support security agencies in maintaining peace and protecting lives and property, making the alleged actions of the suspect particularly troubling.

Security analysts say the case underscores the need for proper regulation and oversight of local vigilante outfits to ensure accountability and prevent abuse of authority.

As the search for Anamelechi continues, the police have reiterated their commitment to bringing him to justice and ensuring that those affected by the incident receive the necessary support.

The tragic event has once again highlighted concerns over interpersonal violence and the importance of conflict resolution mechanisms within communities, as authorities work to unravel the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
