Enugu Police Order Probe Into Suspect’s Death During Anti-Cultism Operation
The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a male suspect, identified as Nnaji Izuchukwu, during an intelligence-led operation by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Section of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

The command said preliminary findings indicated that the operation was conducted at Bull Hotel, Asata, Enugu, following intelligence about the activities of a suspected drug dealer and alleged member of the Vikings Confraternity.

According to the police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the operation targeted Nworie Chidera Kelvin, popularly known as “Akidi,” who was reportedly staying at the hotel with associates.

Ndukwe said Akidi was allegedly linked to several cases involving unlawful possession of firearms and cult-related activities, including a case in which he had reportedly been charged in absentia. He was also suspected of keeping firearms and other items allegedly used by the gang.

The operation reportedly led to the arrest of Akidi and nine other suspects, comprising males and females aged between 17 and 28.

Police said officers recovered quantities of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis, commonly known as “loud,” a weighing scale believed to have been used to measure illicit drugs, and ₦43,400 in various denominations.

However, the operation took a tragic turn when Nnaji and another suspect allegedly attempted to escape by jumping through a window.

Ndukwe said that while officers pursued the fleeing suspects, one operative was confronted by the two men, who allegedly attempted to disarm him.

“While pursuing them, an operative was confronted by both suspects, who allegedly attempted to disarm him. In the ensuing struggle, the firearm discharged, leaving Nnaji with gunshot injuries, while the other suspect escaped,” the police spokesperson said.

He added that Nnaji was rushed to a hospital, where he was later confirmed dead. His remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.

Following the incident, Commissioner Giwa directed that the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death be thoroughly investigated.

The police commissioner also appealed to the deceased’s family, associates and other concerned individuals to remain calm while the investigation proceeds.

He assured them that any police officer found culpable in the incident would face appropriate disciplinary action.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the firearm discharge and determine whether the officers involved acted in accordance with police procedures.

The police have yet to disclose further details about the ongoing investigation or the outcome of the planned autopsy.
