Man Reunites With Son After 17-Year Custody Battle, Alleges Mother Claimed He Was Dead

A Nigerian man has recounted his emotional reunion with his son after nearly two decades of separation, alleging that the child’s mother deliberately prevented him from having a relationship with the boy by falsely telling him that his father had died.

The man, who shared his story in a video that has attracted widespread attention on social media, said he spent 17 years fighting to be part of his son’s life. According to him, the prolonged separation was the result of repeated efforts by the child’s mother to deny him access to the boy despite knowing he was the biological father.

Speaking in Yoruba, the father explained that his son’s mother allegedly misled the child from an early age by telling him that his father was dead. He claimed the misinformation shaped the boy’s childhood and prevented the development of a normal father-son relationship.

According to him, despite the mother’s claims, the boy eventually discovered his father’s true identity. However, because of the restrictions imposed by his mother, the child could only visit him secretly whenever an opportunity arose.

The father recalled one of the most difficult moments during the dispute, claiming that when the boy was about 10 years old, his mother accused him of kidnapping his own son and reported him to the police.

He alleged that officers from the anti-kidnapping unit became involved after the complaint was made. Faced with the situation, he said he reluctantly allowed the authorities to take the child away rather than escalate the confrontation.

Reflecting on the incident, he said he believed there was little he could do at the time because the child’s mother appeared determined to keep them apart.

The man explained that the separation continued for several more years despite his desire to maintain contact with his son. He said the teenager later began making independent efforts to reconnect with him.

According to the father, when the boy turned 15, he once again visited him despite his mother’s objections. Concerned that the situation could lead to further accusations or legal complications, the father said he reported the matter to the police to document the circumstances surrounding the visits.

The conflict eventually moved to the courtroom when the teenager reached the age of 17 and expressed a strong desire to live permanently with his father.

The man said the matter was subjected to legal proceedings during which both parties presented their cases before the court.

According to him, the court examined the available evidence and ultimately ruled in his favour after confirming his paternity.

He disclosed that the court also directed that his son’s surname be changed to reflect his biological father’s family name.

The father further claimed that a DNA test was conducted during the legal process because the child’s mother allegedly continued to challenge his right to custody and access.

He said the DNA results confirmed that he was indeed the biological father, strengthening his case before the court.

According to him, the court subsequently granted him custody of the teenager, bringing to an end what he described as a painful 17-year struggle to establish and exercise his parental rights.

The man also alleged that during the proceedings, the child’s mother demanded ₦5 million as compensation for raising the boy alone over the years.

However, he said the court rejected the request and did not grant the financial claim.

Following the judgment, the father expressed gratitude that he had finally been given the opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with his son after years of separation.

He described the reunion as one of the happiest moments of his life, noting that no parent should be deprived of the opportunity to participate in the upbringing of their child without just cause.

Using his experience as a lesson for other families, he appealed to separated or single parents to always place the interests of their children above personal disagreements.

He particularly urged mothers not to intentionally prevent children from having access to their fathers where there are no legitimate safety concerns, arguing that both parents play important roles in a child’s emotional and psychological development.

According to him, while financial support is important, the presence, guidance and emotional involvement of a father cannot be replaced by money.

He stressed that children deserve the opportunity to know and build healthy relationships with both parents whenever possible, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the end of a relationship.

The man’s account has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating issues surrounding child custody, parental rights and the welfare of children following the breakdown of relationships.

While some commentators sympathised with the father’s ordeal and commended the court’s decision, others stressed the importance of ensuring that custody disputes are resolved through lawful means with the child’s best interests as the primary consideration.

The story has also reignited conversations about co-parenting, family law and the need for separated parents to avoid using children as instruments in personal conflicts, as many observers argued that prolonged parental disputes often have lasting emotional consequences for the children involved.
