Fire Outbreak Engulfs Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate as Lagos Emergency Teams Battle Blaze

A fire outbreak has been reported at the Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State, triggering an emergency response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and raising fresh concerns over the spate of fire incidents in the state.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident on Saturday, disclosing that firefighters were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining facilities within the industrial hub.

In a brief statement issued to the public, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, assured residents, workers and business owners in the area that the situation was being effectively managed by emergency responders.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a fire outbreak at Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate, Mile 2, Lagos,” Adeseye stated.

She added, “We are assuring the public that we are currently on top of the situation, and the public need not exercise fear.”

According to the fire service boss, firefighting operations were ongoing as of the time of the statement, with personnel working to fully extinguish the fire and secure the affected area. She noted that emergency responders were maintaining a strong presence at the scene to ensure that the fire did not escalate or result in secondary incidents.

As of the time of filing this report, details regarding the cause of the fire, the specific facilities affected, and the extent of damage to property had not yet been ascertained. Authorities said investigations would commence after the fire had been completely brought under control.

The Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate is a major industrial and commercial zone in Lagos, housing warehouses, factories and logistics companies. Any significant fire incident in the area poses potential risks not only to businesses but also to nearby residential communities, given the presence of flammable materials and heavy-duty equipment.

Eyewitnesses in the area reported seeing thick smoke rising into the sky, prompting concern among workers and residents before emergency services arrived. Some businesses were said to have temporarily shut down operations as a precautionary measure while firefighting efforts continued.

The incident adds to a growing list of fire outbreaks recorded in Lagos in recent weeks, particularly in commercial and industrial areas, raising renewed questions about fire safety standards, emergency preparedness and compliance with building regulations.

In a related development, SaharaReporters had earlier reported that a raging fire gutted a one-storey commercial building on Somoye Osundairo Street in the heart of Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State, destroying computers and accessories worth millions of naira.

The inferno, which reportedly broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, affected a building largely occupied by dealers in computers, phones and related accessories. The incident further heightened fears over recurring fire outbreaks in Nigeria’s largest technology hub, where densely packed shops and electrical installations increase the risk of fire disasters.

According to a preliminary incident report issued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), distress calls were received through the state’s 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at about 1:55am. This immediately triggered the activation of the state’s emergency response plan from LASEMA’s Command and Control Centre located in Alausa, Ikeja.

Emergency response teams were promptly mobilised to the scene, with officials arriving at approximately 2:15am. Upon arrival, responders encountered active flames and thick smoke billowing from the commercial structure, indicating that the fire had already reached an advanced stage.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency confirmed that the fire had caused extensive damage to goods and equipment stored in the building.

“The response team met the building engulfed in flames with heavy smoke emanating from the structure, an indication of intense combustion,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

Although no fatalities were reported in the Computer Village incident, traders suffered heavy losses, with many lamenting the destruction of expensive electronics, spare parts and business records. The incident once again highlighted the vulnerability of commercial clusters to fire hazards, particularly during late-night hours when shops are closed and fires can spread unnoticed.

Stakeholders have repeatedly called on business owners and facility managers to prioritise fire prevention measures, including the installation of functional fire extinguishers, proper electrical wiring, adherence to safety regulations and regular safety audits.

The Lagos State Government has also urged residents and business operators to remain vigilant and to promptly report emergencies through official channels to ensure quick response times.

As firefighters continue efforts to fully extinguish the Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate fire, authorities have appealed to members of the public to stay away from the scene to allow emergency teams to operate without obstruction.

Further updates are expected as investigations into the cause and impact of the fire outbreak continue.
