Enugu Air Aircraft Veers Off Runway at Benin Airport, Passengers Escape Unhurt

An aircraft belonging to Enugu Air veered off the runway shortly after landing at the Benin Airport on Thursday, sparking concern among passengers and aviation stakeholders. However, the airline has confirmed that all passengers and crew members on board were safely evacuated without any injuries or loss of life.

The incident, which occurred after the aircraft had successfully touched down, was described by the airline as a runway excursion, an aviation term used to describe situations where an aircraft leaves the designated runway surface during landing or takeoff. Contrary to initial reports circulating on social media suggesting that the aircraft had crash-landed, Enugu Air clarified that the event did not amount to a crash and stressed that the safety of everyone on board was never compromised.

The aircraft involved in the incident was one of the airline’s Embraer regional jets, part of the fleet recently deployed by the Enugu State-owned carrier to expand its domestic commercial flight operations across Nigeria.

In an official statement shared on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Enugu Air confirmed the occurrence and assured the travelling public that emergency procedures were swiftly activated, resulting in the safe evacuation of everyone on board.

“Enugu Air wishes to inform the public that one of our aircraft operating into Benin experienced a runway excursion after landing today,” the airline stated.

The carrier further disclosed that all passengers and crew members successfully disembarked from the aircraft without sustaining any injuries.

“We confirm that all passengers and crew have safely disembarked and there were no injuries or casualties,” the statement read.

According to the airline, the aircraft has since been secured while the appropriate aviation regulatory agencies have been notified in accordance with established aviation safety protocols.

“The aircraft has been secured, and the relevant aviation authorities have been notified in line with established procedures. An assessment of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the occurrence is currently underway,” Enugu Air added.

The airline noted that investigations into the incident have commenced and that aviation experts will examine the aircraft as well as operational and environmental conditions surrounding the landing to determine the immediate and remote causes of the runway excursion.

Although no official cause has yet been identified, aviation incidents of this nature can result from a variety of factors, including adverse weather conditions, runway surface contamination, mechanical issues, pilot operational decisions, or other technical and environmental circumstances. Aviation authorities are expected to conduct a comprehensive investigation before reaching any conclusions.

The runway excursion has also affected the airline’s flight operations, with Enugu Air warning that some scheduled services may experience temporary disruptions while the aircraft is assessed and necessary operational adjustments are made.

“As a result, there may be temporary adjustments to some flight schedules. Passengers affected by any changes will be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance,” the airline stated.

The carrier appealed to affected passengers for patience and understanding, assuring them that customer support teams were already working to minimise disruptions and provide timely assistance to travellers whose flights might be delayed or rescheduled.

Reaffirming its commitment to safety, Enugu Air maintained that the protection of passengers, crew members and operational integrity remains its foremost priority.

“The safety of our passengers, crew, and operations remains our highest priority. We appreciate your understanding and will continue to provide updates through our official communication channels,” the airline added.

Shortly after news of the incident broke, several videos and photographs surfaced on social media showing the aircraft resting on the grassy area adjacent to the runway. The images quickly attracted widespread attention online, with many users initially claiming that the aircraft had crash-landed.

However, Enugu Air moved swiftly to correct the reports, explaining that while the aircraft had indeed left the runway after landing, the occurrence was a runway excursion rather than an air crash. The clarification helped allay fears as the airline confirmed that no fatalities or injuries were recorded.

Industry observers noted that runway excursions, while classified as serious aviation incidents, do not necessarily result in catastrophic outcomes, particularly when emergency response procedures function effectively and aircraft occupants are evacuated safely.

The aircraft involved is among the Embraer regional jets recently introduced into Enugu Air’s growing fleet. The airline, owned by the Enugu State Government, has been positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s domestic aviation industry by operating regional routes aimed at improving connectivity within the country.

Since commencing commercial operations, the airline has sought to project a strong safety culture while expanding services to major Nigerian cities. Thursday’s incident therefore represents one of the first significant operational challenges facing the relatively new carrier.

Expectedly, the Nigerian aviation regulatory authorities are likely to carry out a detailed investigation into the occurrence. Such investigations typically involve technical inspections of the aircraft, analysis of flight data and cockpit voice recordings where necessary, interviews with the flight crew and airport personnel, as well as examinations of weather conditions, runway status and air traffic control communications at the time of the incident.

The outcome of the investigation will determine the factors responsible for the runway excursion and whether any safety recommendations or corrective measures should be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in future.

For passengers and the wider aviation community, the most reassuring aspect of Thursday’s incident remains the absence of casualties. The successful evacuation of all occupants without injuries reflects the effectiveness of existing aviation safety procedures and emergency response mechanisms.

As investigations continue, Enugu Air has pledged to remain transparent by providing regular updates through its official communication channels while working closely with aviation authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the runway excursion.

The airline also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest operational and safety standards, assuring passengers that every necessary step would be taken to restore normal flight schedules and sustain public confidence in its services. With the aircraft now secured and investigations underway, stakeholders across Nigeria’s aviation sector will be closely monitoring the findings, which are expected to provide greater clarity on what led to the runway excursion at the Benin Airport.
