Covenant University, the University of Ibadan (UI), and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked universities in the newly released 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
The latest ranking, released on Wednesday, September 30, placed the three Nigerian institutions in the global 801–1000 bracket, making them the country’s leading representatives in the latest edition of the prestigious international university rankings.
The 2027 rankings also recorded the inclusion of several Nigerian universities that were not listed in the previous edition. Among the new additions are Osun State University, the University of Maiduguri, Kwara State University, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Following the three institutions in the 801–1000 bracket are Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin, which were placed in the 1001–1200 category.
Babcock University, Osun State University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were ranked in the 1201–1400 bracket.
The Federal University of Technology, Minna; Nnamdi Azikiwe University; Obafemi Awolowo University; University of Benin; University of Jos; and University of Maiduguri were placed within the 1401–1600 category.
The Federal University of Technology, Akure was ranked in the 1601–1800 bracket, while the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology; Lagos State University; Olabisi Onabanjo University; and the University of Calabar were placed in the 1801–2000 category.
Six other Nigerian institutions were ranked in the 2001+ category. They are Delta State University, Abraka; Ekiti State University; Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Federal University Oye-Ekiti; Kwara State University; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; and the University of Port Harcourt.
The latest ranking reflects the growing participation of Nigerian universities in global university assessment systems, while also highlighting differences in their positions across the international rankings.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings assess universities using a range of indicators covering areas such as teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry engagement.
For Nigerian universities, participation in international rankings has increasingly drawn attention to issues including research productivity, academic visibility, international collaboration, institutional data management and the ability to attract research funding.
The appearance of additional Nigerian institutions in the 2027 edition also provides a broader picture of the country’s higher education sector on the international stage.
The ranking, however, places institutions within broad bands rather than assigning an individual numerical position to universities in several categories. Consequently, universities listed within the same band share the reported ranking range.
The 2027 edition therefore provides an updated snapshot of the international standing of participating Nigerian universities, with Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos occupying the highest reported ranking band among Nigerian institutions.
