The United States Mission in Nigeria has welcomed Dr. Cajetan Iheka, a distinguished Nigerian scholar and Professor of English at Yale University, who is set to begin a 10-month Fulbright appointment at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The US Mission announced the development while welcoming Iheka back to Nigeria, describing his appointment as another important contribution to academic exchange and collaboration between the United States and Nigeria.
According to the announcement, Iheka will commence his Fulbright assignment on August 20 and will spend the next 10 months at the University of Lagos, where he is expected to contribute significantly to teaching, research, postgraduate education and faculty development.
Iheka is an accomplished scholar with extensive experience in African studies and the humanities. At Yale University, he serves as Director of the Whitney Humanities Center, Chair of the Council on African Studies and Head of the Yale Africa Initiative. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the African Studies Review, one of the leading academic journals devoted to scholarship on Africa.
His appointment at UNILAG is expected to provide opportunities for knowledge exchange between Nigerian academics and one of the world’s leading universities.
During his stay at the University of Lagos, Iheka will lead seminars and training programmes designed particularly for early-career academics and postgraduate students. His activities will focus on strengthening academic capacity, improving research skills and supporting the professional development of emerging scholars.
Beyond seminars and training, the Yale professor is also expected to participate in course development and contribute to the redesign of graduate curricula at the university.
He will further mentor faculty members through workshops focused on teaching and academic publishing, areas that are critical to strengthening the quality and global visibility of research produced by Nigerian universities.
The Fulbright appointment therefore goes beyond an individual academic exchange, with its potential benefits extending to students, lecturers, researchers and the wider academic community.
The US Mission also highlighted the long history of the Fulbright programme in Nigeria, noting that more than 1,200 Fulbright scholars have participated in academic exchanges in the country since 1960.
According to the mission, many of those scholars have gone on to occupy important leadership positions in government and in public, private and international institutions.
The Fulbright programme is one of the United States’ flagship international educational exchange initiatives. It seeks to promote mutual understanding between nations by enabling scholars, students, researchers and professionals to study, teach and conduct research across borders.
