Canada Knocks Out South Africa to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Canada booked a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Africa’s Bafana Bafana 1-0 in a tense Round of 32 encounter at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.

The hard-fought victory ended South Africa’s impressive World Cup campaign and ensured that the North American side advanced to the last 16 of the expanded 48-team tournament for the first time in the nation’s history.

The match appeared destined for extra time after both sides battled through more than 90 minutes without a breakthrough. South Africa defended resolutely for much of the contest, frustrating the Canadian attack with disciplined defending and determined goalkeeping.

However, just when extra time seemed inevitable, Canada found the decisive breakthrough in stoppage time.

Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio emerged as the hero for the Canadians, scoring in the 90+2nd minute to send his side into the next round and break South African hearts. The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among Canadian players, coaching staff and supporters, while Bafana Bafana’s players were left devastated after coming within moments of forcing extra time.

The victory represents another landmark achievement for Canada’s men’s national team, which has enjoyed its finest-ever FIFA World Cup campaign. Having already reached the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history, the Canadians have now taken another significant step by progressing to the Round of 16.

The contest was fiercely competitive from the opening whistle, with both teams creating scoring opportunities but struggling to convert them.

Canada enjoyed much of the attacking initiative during the first half and believed they should have been awarded a penalty shortly before the interval after Richie Laryea appeared to be brought down inside the penalty area by South Africa’s Khuliso Mudau.

Referee João Pinheiro waved away Canada’s appeals, while the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) chose not to intervene, a decision that provoked an angry reaction from Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch. Television replays suggested the incident was highly contentious, with several observers arguing that Canada had a legitimate case for a spot kick.

Despite the controversy, Canada maintained its composure throughout the second half, continuing to press for the winner against a South African side that defended with resilience and discipline.

Bafana Bafana, making their first appearance in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds, also had moments of promise, relying on quick counter-attacks and the creativity of their attacking players to threaten the Canadian defence.

South Africa had qualified for the Round of 32 after defeating Korea Republic in their final group match, marking the country’s first-ever progression beyond the World Cup group stage. Their historic achievement had generated enormous excitement among South African supporters, who hoped Hugo Broos’ side could continue their remarkable journey.

Although their World Cup adventure has now come to an end, Bafana Bafana earned widespread praise for exceeding expectations during the tournament.

They demonstrated defensive organisation, resilience and determination throughout the group stage before narrowly falling to Canada in one of the most closely contested matches of the knockout round.

For Canada, the victory continues an extraordinary World Cup campaign that has seen the team establish several national milestones.

After earning their first-ever World Cup point and first-ever World Cup victory during the group stage, Jesse Marsch’s side has now added its first knockout-stage win to an increasingly impressive list of achievements.

Canada will now shift its attention to the Round of 16, where the team will continue its quest for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The victory also keeps alive the hopes of the tournament co-host nation of producing its best-ever performance on football’s biggest stage.

For South Africa, the defeat marks a painful conclusion to an inspiring campaign that captured the imagination of football fans across Africa. Bafana Bafana leave the tournament with their heads held high after making history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time and proving they can compete with some of the world’s strongest footballing nations.

While the result ends South Africa’s World Cup dream, Canada’s dramatic late victory ensures the North Americans remain firmly in contention as the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its decisive stages.
