Peter Obi Reportedly Files ₦8 Billion Defamation Suit Against Kenneth Okonkwo

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reportedly instituted a defamation lawsuit against former ally and actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo, seeking ₦8 billion in damages over alleged defamatory statements made against him.

According to reports, the suit was filed before a competent court following comments allegedly made by Okonkwo, which Obi believes have damaged his reputation, integrity, and standing both within Nigeria and internationally.

Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that Kenneth Okonkwo has been formally served with court processes and has been directed to appear before the court to defend the allegations attributed to him.

As part of the legal proceedings, the defendant is reportedly expected to provide all evidence and documentary proof supporting the statements he allegedly made about the former Anambra State governor.

The lawsuit marks a significant escalation in the public disagreement between the two politicians, whose relationship has deteriorated in recent months after years of political collaboration.

Okonkwo was previously one of Peter Obi’s most vocal supporters during the 2023 presidential election campaign and played an active role in promoting Obi’s presidential ambition. However, the relationship later broke down following disagreements over political strategy, leadership, and the future direction of the opposition movement.

Since their fallout, both men have publicly exchanged criticisms, with Okonkwo making a number of comments about Obi and his political decisions in media interviews and on social media platforms.

The latest legal action suggests that Obi believes some of those remarks crossed the boundaries of legitimate political criticism and amounted to defamation.

According to reports, the NDC presidential candidate is asking the court to award ₦8 billion as damages for the alleged injury caused by the statements.

Legal experts note that in defamation cases, a claimant is generally required to establish that the statements complained of were published, referred to the claimant, were defamatory in nature, and caused reputational harm.

Once a case is filed, the burden shifts during the proceedings for both parties to present evidence in support of their respective positions.

In the present matter, reports indicate that Kenneth Okonkwo has been directed to substantiate the allegations he allegedly made by presenting credible evidence before the court.

Should the matter proceed to trial, the court is expected to examine whether the statements complained of were factual assertions or protected expressions of opinion, whether they were supported by evidence, and whether they caused measurable damage to the claimant’s reputation.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Peter Obi nor his legal representatives had publicly released the full details of the court filings.

Similarly, Kenneth Okonkwo had not issued an official response addressing the reported lawsuit or the claims that he had been served with court documents.

Political observers believe the case could attract significant public attention given the prominence of both individuals and their former political association.

The dispute also comes at a time when political activities are intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties and political figures repositioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.

Analysts say the legal proceedings could have implications beyond the courtroom, particularly in shaping public perception and political relationships within the opposition.

Defamation suits involving public office holders and politicians are not uncommon in Nigeria, where courts are often called upon to determine whether public statements constitute fair political criticism or unlawful attacks on an individual’s character.

The outcome of the case, if it proceeds to hearing, will depend on the evidence presented by both parties and the court’s interpretation of the applicable laws governing defamation.

For now, the reported lawsuit adds another chapter to the increasingly strained relationship between Peter Obi and Kenneth Okonkwo, two figures who once stood on the same political platform but now appear set to resolve their differences through judicial proceedings.

The court is expected to fix a date for further proceedings after the defendant enters an appearance and responds to the claims contained in the suit.
