Governor Soludo Mourns Renowned Military Leader, Lt. Gen. Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of the state’s most distinguished sons, Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (Rtd), OFR, whose death occurred on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, after a brief illness.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Governor Soludo described the late military officer as an exceptional patriot, a disciplined leader, and an international statesman whose remarkable career brought honour and recognition not only to Anambra State but also to Nigeria and the global community.

The Governor noted that General Obiakor’s life was defined by service, excellence, courage, and an unwavering commitment to peace and national development. According to him, the retired army general represented the very best of Anambra’s values of hard work, integrity, leadership, and dedication to humanity.

Born on February 18, 1951, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Lieutenant General Obiakor traced his roots to Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. His journey into military service began when he gained admission into the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of the 10th Regular Course in 1971. Upon successful completion of his military training, he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps in 1973, marking the beginning of a distinguished career that would span several decades.

Governor Soludo observed that throughout his military career, General Obiakor consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism and leadership qualities that earned him respect among his colleagues, subordinates, and international partners.

The late officer rose steadily through the ranks of the Nigerian Army, holding several strategic appointments and commanding important military formations across the country. His leadership capabilities were evident in the various regimental, brigade, and divisional commands he handled with distinction.

Among his notable appointments, General Obiakor served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, one of the country’s most important military formations. He also served as Chief of Administration at the Army Headquarters, where he played a significant role in strengthening the administrative and operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.

Governor Soludo stated that beyond his accomplishments within Nigeria, General Obiakor distinguished himself on the international stage, earning global recognition for his contributions to peacekeeping operations and international security.

One of the most defining moments of his illustrious career was his appointment as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). In that role, he successfully led multinational peacekeeping efforts during a critical period in Liberia’s post-conflict reconstruction process.

His outstanding performance in Liberia further enhanced Nigeria’s reputation as a leading contributor to international peacekeeping operations and showcased the professionalism of Nigerian military personnel on the global stage.

The Governor particularly highlighted General Obiakor’s historic appointment in 2008 as the United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations at the UN Headquarters in New York. The appointment was a landmark achievement, as he became the first African to occupy the prestigious position.

The role placed him at the centre of global peacekeeping policy and operations, where he provided strategic military advice and contributed to the planning and implementation of peace missions in conflict zones around the world.

Governor Soludo noted that the appointment was not only a personal achievement for General Obiakor but also a source of pride for Anambra State, Nigeria, and the African continent.

After decades of dedicated military service, General Obiakor retired from the Nigerian Army in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, honour, and exemplary leadership.

The Governor described him as a rare statesman whose influence extended beyond military circles. He said General Obiakor remained a source of inspiration to young Nigerians, particularly those aspiring to careers in public service, leadership, and national development.

According to Governor Soludo, the passing of the retired general represents a significant loss to Anambra State and the nation as a whole.

“Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor was a true patriot, a disciplined leader, and a global icon whose commitment to peace, security, and humanity transcended national boundaries. His life and career remain a shining example of selfless service and excellence,” the Governor stated.

He added that Anambra State has lost a distinguished ambassador, an accomplished military officer, and a visionary leader whose contributions will continue to inspire future generations.

Governor Soludo extended his deepest condolences to the Obiakor family, the Nigerian Army, friends, associates, and all those whose lives were touched by the late general’s service and leadership.

He prayed that God would grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear the painful loss and that the soul of Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (Rtd), OFR, would find eternal rest.

As tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, many have remembered General Obiakor as a man of honour, courage, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to peace. His legacy, built through decades of distinguished service to Nigeria and the international community, will remain etched in history for generations to come.
