A prominent maritime expert and philanthropist, Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as he intensifies consultations ahead of the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election for Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1.
Onwubiko’s entry into the party is being viewed by political observers as a major boost for the NDC in Lagos State, particularly in Amuwo Odofin, where grassroots mobilization and youth engagement are expected to shape the political contest ahead of the next general elections.
The maritime guru, who is widely known for his philanthropic interventions and community support programmes, declared that his decision to join the NDC was driven by his desire to contribute meaningfully to grassroots development and improve the welfare of residents of Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1.
Speaking during his formal declaration, Onwubiko said the time had come for a new generation of leadership focused on service delivery, people-oriented governance, and inclusive development.
According to him, the people of Amuwo Odofin deserve quality representation that prioritizes their needs and ensures that government policies directly impact ordinary citizens.
He pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that residents of the constituency enjoy the full benefits of democratic governance if elected into the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2027.
“My mission is to serve the people sincerely and ensure that the dividends of democracy get to every part of Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1,” he said.
“We have many talented youths, hardworking women, traders, artisans, and professionals in this constituency who deserve better opportunities, quality infrastructure, improved education, healthcare, empowerment programmes, and economic support.”
Onwubiko emphasized that his political ambition is rooted in service and community development rather than personal interests.
He stated that his years of experience in the maritime sector and humanitarian activities have exposed him to the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians, especially residents at the grassroots level.
According to him, many communities in Lagos still struggle with inadequate infrastructure, unemployment, poor drainage systems, and insufficient social welfare programmes despite the enormous economic potential of the state.
He assured residents that he would champion legislation and policies aimed at improving the standard of living of his constituents if given the mandate to represent them.
“I believe representation should go beyond occupying political office. It should be about listening to the people, understanding their problems, and finding practical solutions that will improve their lives,” he added.
The philanthropist also promised to prioritize youth empowerment, education, and skills acquisition programmes to help reduce unemployment and social insecurity within the constituency.
He noted that young people remain critical stakeholders in nation-building and must be given opportunities to succeed.
“Our youths need empowerment, mentorship, and opportunities. We cannot continue to ignore them while expecting society to progress. My focus will be on creating pathways for economic growth and development for our young people,” he stated.
Onwubiko further assured traders, market women, transport workers, and small business owners in the constituency that he would advocate policies that support small-scale businesses and improve local economic activities.
He stressed that many families are struggling under harsh economic conditions and require leaders who genuinely understand their daily realities.
Political supporters and party loyalists who welcomed him into the NDC described his emergence as a major development capable of strengthening the party’s structure in Lagos State.
