Troops Arrest Bandit Leader’s Deputy, Wife in Gombe Crackdown

Security operatives have arrested the second-in-command to a notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Auta, in a major breakthrough against criminal networks operating in Nigeria’s North-East. The suspect, identified as Bala, popularly known as “Pakapaka,” was apprehended alongside his wife, Zulaha Bala, in Gombe State following a coordinated, intelligence-led operation.

According to security sources, the arrest was the outcome of sustained surveillance and strategic tracking across multiple locations, targeting members of the criminal syndicate who had been on the run. The suspects were said to have fled from the dense Dajin Madam Forest, a known hideout for armed groups, where the gang had previously established its base of operations.

The operation forms part of a broader effort by security forces to dismantle bandit networks and disrupt their mobility across the region. Intelligence reports indicated that Bala, regarded as a key lieutenant within the group, had been attempting to evade capture following increased military pressure on their strongholds.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the arrests on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the operation. He noted that the breakthrough was achieved through meticulous intelligence gathering, combined with coordinated ground operations designed to intercept high-value targets within the network.

According to the sources, security operatives tracked the movement of the suspects over several days, monitoring their attempts to relocate and blend into civilian areas after abandoning their forest base. The eventual interception, they said, was the result of precise timing and tactical coordination among units deployed for the mission.

Both Bala and his wife are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as investigators seek to extract actionable intelligence that could lead to further arrests and the dismantling of the wider criminal structure. Authorities are particularly interested in uncovering the operational links, supply routes, and communication channels that sustained the group’s activities.

In a related development, troops carried out follow-up patrols in and around Bayar Village after receiving intelligence that the group’s leader, Kachalla Auta, had relocated to the area. Despite the intensified search, security forces were unable to establish direct contact with the fleeing kingpin during the operation.

Military sources, however, emphasised that the pressure on the group remains unrelenting. They disclosed that security forces have continued to assert dominance across the broader operational theatre through aggressive patrols, reconnaissance missions, and sustained surveillance.

These efforts are part of a wider counterinsurgency strategy aimed at restricting the movement of armed groups and dismantling their networks across Plateau State, Taraba State, and adjoining regions. By targeting both leadership figures and logistical enablers, authorities hope to weaken the operational capacity of bandit groups and restore stability to affected communities.

The latest arrests underscore the growing reliance on intelligence-driven operations in Nigeria’s fight against banditry and organised crime. Analysts say such approaches—combining surveillance, human intelligence, and coordinated field action—are proving increasingly effective in tracking and apprehending fugitives who rely on mobility and remote hideouts to evade law enforcement.

While the capture of Bala marks a significant gain for security agencies, attention now turns to the pursuit of Kachalla Auta himself, whose continued evasion highlights the challenges of combating well-entrenched criminal networks operating across difficult terrain.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the offensive until all key actors within the syndicate are brought to justice, signaling that operations will continue across the region in the coming weeks.
