The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, on Saturday paid a visit to the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, where he held a closed door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Although details of the meeting were not officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report, the visit is widely believed to be connected to ongoing political developments within the opposition party, particularly amid internal realignments and leadership challenges facing the PDP.
Turaki arrived at the Obasanjo residence in the company of several prominent party stakeholders, underscoring the significance of the engagement. Members of his entourage included former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu; former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang; and former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Taofeek Arapaja, among other senior party figures.
The presence of these high profile PDP leaders has fuelled speculation that the meeting may be aimed at seeking the counsel and intervention of the former president, who remains a key political influencer and elder statesman within the party. Observers believe the discussions could centre on reconciliation efforts, party unity, and strategic repositioning ahead of future electoral contests.
The PDP has in recent months been grappling with internal disagreements, defections, and leadership disputes, prompting renewed efforts by party leaders to stabilise its structure and strengthen cohesion. Political analysts say engaging Obasanjo, a former PDP president and one of the party’s founding figures, could signal an attempt to leverage his experience and moral authority to address lingering crises.
Neither the PDP leadership nor Obasanjo’s media office issued an official statement on the outcome or agenda of the meeting. However, sources within the party described the visit as part of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders to navigate what they described as a critical period for the opposition party.
The meeting in Abeokuta adds to a series of high level political engagements involving senior PDP figures in recent weeks, as the party seeks to redefine its direction and relevance in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
