The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has said he has remained faithful to his wife, Sherifat, throughout their marriage, stating that he has never had an intimate relationship with another woman since they got married.
Aregbesola made the statement while addressing party supporters during an ADC campaign rally held in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
Speaking in Yoruba, the former governor of Osun State attributed his decision to remain faithful to his wife to his fear of God and a personal commitment he made to himself. He said fidelity had been an important aspect of his personal life and spiritual convictions.
According to him, he had also used his faithfulness as part of a personal appeal to God while pursuing his political ambitions. Aregbesola explained that he prayed for divine guidance and intervention, maintaining that his conduct in marriage formed part of the basis of that prayer.
During the rally, he told supporters that only a few men could confidently make such a declaration. He stated that because of his reverence for God, he had never engaged in intimacy with any woman other than his wife since their marriage.
Aregbesola further disclosed that he prayed to God concerning his political future and expressed confidence that a political breakthrough would occur in the coming year. He said he believed that by June of the following year they would celebrate victory at the Government House.
The former governor governed Osun State from 2010 to 2018 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress before later becoming a leading figure in the ADC. He currently serves as the National Secretary of the opposition party, which is actively contesting the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
The Osun governorship election is slated for Saturday, August 15, 2026. Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party is seeking a second term in office. The All Progressives Congress has fielded Bola Oyebamiji as its candidate, while the ADC is represented by Najeem Folasayo Salaam.
Political activities have intensified across Osun State as parties continue their campaigns in the final days before the election. The ADC has been holding rallies and mobilisation programmes in several local government areas in an effort to strengthen support for its candidate and challenge the incumbent administration.
Observers say the election is expected to be closely watched because of the involvement of prominent political figures and the growing competition among the major parties in the state. Aregbesola’s remarks at the Ejigbo rally drew attention from supporters and political observers, becoming one of the notable moments of the campaign as parties continue their efforts to persuade voters ahead of polling day.
