Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has joined millions of Nigerians, particularly sons and daughters of the Onitsha Kingdom, in celebrating the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, on the occasion of his 85th birthday.
In a heartfelt tribute, Obi described the revered monarch as a shining example of responsible leadership, wisdom, humility and service to humanity, noting that his life and reign continue to inspire people across Nigeria and beyond.
According to Obi, the Obi of Onitsha has remained one of the country’s most respected traditional rulers whose influence extends far beyond the boundaries of his kingdom.
“Today, I join millions of Nigerians, sons and daughters of Onitsha Kingdom, and all lovers of culture, wisdom and responsible leadership in celebrating His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, the revered Obi of Onitsha, as he marks his 85th birthday,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor said the monarch’s reign has consistently demonstrated the important role traditional institutions continue to play in promoting peace, moral values, cultural preservation and national development.
He noted that despite rapid societal changes and growing challenges confronting modern society, the Obi of Onitsha has continued to stand out as a voice of reason and a moral compass for both leaders and citizens.
“At 85, His Majesty remains a shining symbol of dignity, intellect, humility and selfless service. His reign has shown clearly that traditional institutions are not relics of the past, but important pillars for peace, cultural identity, moral leadership and nation-building,” Obi said.
Peter Obi further stated that the monarch’s life serves as a powerful reminder that true leadership is rooted in character, discipline, compassion and genuine commitment to the wellbeing of the people.
According to him, the Obi of Onitsha has continued to bridge the gap between traditional values and modern governance through wisdom, integrity and exemplary leadership.
“In a society where values are increasingly being challenged, His Majesty continues to stand tall as a moral compass and a bridge between tradition and modern nation-building,” Obi added.
The former presidential candidate also reflected on the monarch’s distinguished professional career before ascending the throne, describing him as a rare example of excellence and patriotism.
Before becoming the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe built an impressive career in the corporate world, earning recognition both locally and internationally for his professionalism and leadership qualities.
Obi noted that the monarch’s achievements before and after ascending the throne have shown that integrity, competence and patriotism can coexist in leadership.
“As a highly accomplished professional before ascending the throne, and now one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers, the Obi of Onitsha has shown that excellence, integrity and patriotism can coexist in leadership,” he said.
The former governor commended the monarch for his continued dedication to peace, community development and the preservation of Igbo cultural heritage, noting that his reign has brought honour and prestige not only to Onitsha Kingdom but to Nigeria as a whole.
He also praised the Obi of Onitsha for his intellectual depth, calm disposition and ability to unite people across religious, ethnic and political divides.
