United States President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, cautioning its naval forces against approaching a newly declared American blockade zone, in a move that has further heightened tensions in an already volatile Middle East security environment.
In a strongly worded message posted on social media, Trump claimed that a significant portion of Iran’s naval capabilities had already been neutralised. “Iran’s Navy is lying at the bottom of the sea, completely obliterated – 158 ships,” he wrote, asserting that American military operations had dealt a devastating blow to Tehran’s maritime forces.
Despite the sweeping claim, the US President noted that some Iranian vessels had not been targeted. According to him, a limited number of what Iran describes as “fast attack ships” were spared during the operation because they were not considered a major threat at the time. However, Trump made it clear that this restraint could quickly change under the current circumstances.
“Warning: If any of these ships come anywhere close to our blockade, they will be immediately eliminated,” he added, signalling a zero-tolerance approach to any perceived provocation within the designated maritime zone.
The blockade itself was announced on Sunday following the collapse of diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran. Negotiators from both countries had met in Pakistan in an effort to de-escalate tensions and reach a broader agreement, but the discussions ended without a breakthrough. In response, Washington moved swiftly to impose the blockade, which officially came into force on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Washington, D.C. (14:00 GMT).
Analysts say the move marks a significant escalation in the standoff between the two nations and raises concerns about the fragile ceasefire that had only recently been established. The truce, which came into effect just days earlier, was intended to pause hostilities for two weeks and create space for diplomatic engagement. “The restrictions encompass the entirety of the Iranian coastline, including ports and energy infrastructure,” the UKMTO stated, highlighting the extensive scope of the measure. One of the key flashpoints in the ongoing crisis remains the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil supply is transported. Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, Iran had reportedly committed to keeping the strait open to commercial shipping. However, recent developments suggest that vessel traffic has yet to return to normal levels, raising concerns about continued disruptions to global energy flows.
Iranian officials have accused the United States of undermining the ceasefire by failing to restrain its regional allies, particularly Israel. According to Tehran, ongoing Israeli military operations, including airstrikes and ground incursions in Lebanon, constitute a violation of the truce’s broader framework.
Pakistan, which played a mediating role in brokering the ceasefire, had earlier indicated that the agreement was meant to cover multiple conflict zones, including Lebanon.
