Senior Military Officer Dies in Tragic Abuja–Kaduna Highway Crash

A senior Nigerian military officer, Major A.M. Abubakar, has lost his life in a tragic road accident along the busy Abuja–Kaduna highway, a route long known for heavy traffic and frequent incidents.

The fatal crash reportedly occurred on Saturday, March 28, at Azara village near Jere in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with travel along the corridor, which serves as a major link between the Federal Capital Territory and the northern region.

According to available information, the accident involved a commercial Sharon bus carrying passengers and a truck belonging to BUA Cement. The circumstances leading to the collision remain unclear, as authorities have yet to release an official account of what caused the crash.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed that Major Abubakar was among the passengers in the commercial vehicle at the time of the incident. The officer was said to be a student at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), indicating that he was undergoing advanced military training prior to his untimely death.

Reports suggest that the impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the immediate death of the officer at the scene. The force of the crash underscored the violent nature of the accident, leaving little chance of survival for the victim.

Other passengers who were in the vehicle at the time were not as severely affected. They reportedly sustained minor injuries and received medical attention shortly after the incident. No additional fatalities have been confirmed as of the time of this report.

Following the accident, the remains of Major Abubakar were evacuated and deposited at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna. The hospital, a key military medical facility, is expected to handle necessary procedures before the body is released for burial.

Sources also confirmed that the deceased officer’s personal belongings were recovered from the scene and later handed over to his family upon their arrival at the hospital. The development has left relatives, colleagues, and associates in mourning, as news of his sudden death continues to spread.

While the incident has been acknowledged, officials have yet to provide a detailed explanation of the events leading up to the crash. It remains uncertain whether factors such as speeding, poor road conditions, mechanical failure, or human error played a role.

The Abuja–Kaduna highway has, over the years, witnessed numerous accidents, often raising concerns about road safety, enforcement of traffic regulations, and the condition of vehicles plying the route. Incidents like this continue to highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures to protect lives.

Major Abubakar’s death is a significant loss to the military community, particularly as he was in the process of furthering his professional training. His passing adds to the growing number of lives lost on Nigerian roads, reinforcing calls for stronger interventions to curb such tragedies.

As investigations are expected to continue, many will be looking to authorities for clarity on the cause of the accident and possible steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
