Governor Peter Mbah Deploys 21st Century Mechanised Street Sweeping Trucks to Keep Enugu Clean
The Enugu State Government has taken another decisive step in its drive to build a modern, livable, and environmentally sustainable state as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah deployed 21st century mechanised street sweeping trucks and other advanced sanitation equipment to strengthen urban cleanliness across Enugu.
The deployment of the modern sanitation fleet, which includes mechanised street sweeping trucks, waste collection vehicles, and supporting equipment, marks a significant upgrade of the state’s environmental management infrastructure. It reflects the Mbah administration’s commitment to leveraging technology and efficient systems to deliver public services that meet global best practices.
Speaking during the unveiling of the equipment in Enugu, Governor Mbah said cleanliness, order, and environmental sustainability are non negotiable pillars of his administration’s development agenda. He noted that a clean environment is fundamental to public health, economic productivity, and the overall quality of life of citizens.
“Enugu must look and feel like the modern city that it is becoming,” the governor said. “We are deploying these 21st century mechanised street sweeping trucks and other equipment to ensure that our streets, highways, and public spaces remain consistently clean, orderly, and healthy for our people.”
Governor Mbah explained that the new mechanised sweepers are designed to operate efficiently across major roads, inner streets, and commercial districts, significantly reducing manual labour while delivering faster and more thorough cleaning. According to him, the technology driven approach will improve sanitation outcomes and free up human resources for other value adding environmental services.
The governor emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader urban renewal and environmental sustainability programme aimed at transforming Enugu into one of the cleanest and most organised states in Nigeria. He said the government is moving away from ad hoc sanitation efforts to a structured, data driven, and performance based system.
“With these machines, street cleaning will be systematic, scheduled, and measurable,” Mbah said. “This is about building institutions and systems that work every day, not just during special environmental sanitation exercises.”
Officials of the Enugu State Waste Management Authority explained that the mechanised street sweeping trucks are equipped with modern suction systems, rotating brushes, dust suppression technology, and waste containment units, enabling them to clean large stretches of road efficiently while minimising air pollution.
They added that the equipment would be deployed in phases across the Enugu metropolis and key urban centres in the state, operating both day and night to ensure uninterrupted cleanliness without disrupting traffic flow.
Beyond the mechanised sweepers, the newly deployed equipment includes waste compactor trucks, skip loaders, mobile bins, and maintenance support vehicles. These, officials said, would strengthen the entire waste management value chain from collection to disposal.
Environmental experts have described the move as a progressive shift that aligns Enugu with modern cities where mechanised street sweeping is standard practice. They noted that such technology not only improves cleanliness but also reduces the health risks associated with dust, debris, and poor waste handling.
Residents of Enugu have welcomed the development, saying it signals a new era in urban management. Many expressed optimism that the deployment would address long standing concerns about waste accumulation along major roads and markets, particularly during the rainy season.
“This is what we have been expecting,” said a trader in Ogbete Main Market. “If these machines are used well and consistently, Enugu will truly look like the coal city of the future.”
Governor Mbah also used the occasion to call on residents to complement government efforts by adopting responsible waste disposal habits. He stressed that while government is investing heavily in infrastructure and systems, sustainable cleanliness requires active citizen participation.
“A clean Enugu is a shared responsibility,” he said. “Government will provide the tools and the systems, but residents must play their part by keeping their surroundings clean and using designated waste disposal points.”
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for indiscriminate waste dumping, warning that enforcement of environmental laws would be strengthened alongside the deployment of modern equipment.
The introduction of mechanised street sweeping trucks is consistent with Governor Mbah’s broader vision of repositioning Enugu as a hub for investment, tourism, and innovation. Analysts note that environmental quality is increasingly a key factor in attracting businesses and improving urban competitiveness.
Since assuming office, the Mbah administration has prioritised infrastructure renewal, digital governance, security, and environmental management as part of its plan to grow Enugu’s economy and improve living standards.
As the 21st century sanitation equipment rolls onto the streets of Enugu, many see it as more than just a cleanliness initiative. For supporters of the administration, it is a statement of intent that Enugu is embracing modern solutions, institutional efficiency, and a future defined by order, sustainability, and pride in the public space.
