Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged members of the 2026 Batch A, Stream 1 of the National Youth Service Corps to contribute meaningfully to the holistic development of the state during their service year.
The governor gave the charge on Friday at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area, during the swearing in ceremony of 1,820 corps members deployed to Abia State.
Otti reminded the corps members that the essence of the NYSC scheme is to expose young Nigerians to the vast opportunities within the country and to foster national integration through selfless service. He encouraged them to embrace their postings with dedication and patriotism, irrespective of location.

According to him, failing to maximise the opportunities offered by the programme would amount to shortchanging themselves. He noted that the true spirit of the NYSC is anchored on service, diligence, and commitment to nation building.
The governor stressed that corps members have a responsibility to perform their duties conscientiously and make positive impacts wherever they are posted, adding that their conduct and contributions should leave lasting impressions on the communities they serve, beginning from the orientation camp.
Otti also commended the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Gladys Adama, and her team for prioritising the welfare and safety of corps members. He announced that the state government would soon commence the second phase of rehabilitation at the orientation camp, which will include the completion of internal roads, fencing, a pavilion, and the parade ground.
Earlier in her address, Adama emphasised the importance of the orientation course in preparing corps members with the skills, discipline, and values required for a successful service year. She disclosed that the batch comprises 1,820 corps members, made up of 804 males and 1,016 females, and urged them to remain focused throughout the programme.
She expressed appreciation to the governor for his sustained support to the scheme, including the rehabilitation of the camp, installation of solar powered streetlights, improved feeding, and an upward review of the state allowance for corps members. She added that the completion of the second phase of the camp’s rehabilitation remains a key priority.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development and Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Nwaobilor Ananaba, encouraged corps members to distinguish themselves through impactful Community Development Service projects. He reminded them that outstanding performance and dedication are recognised and rewarded by the Abia State Government.
