Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has visited the site of a recent fire outbreak in Aba, describing the incident as a sobering reminder of the need for constant vigilance and effective emergency preparedness.
The fire, which occurred at a facility associated with Nigerian Breweries Plc, raised initial concerns about potential large-scale damage and casualties. However, Governor Otti expressed gratitude that the situation was brought under control without any loss of life.
Speaking during the inspection, the governor noted that the impact of the fire was largely limited to empty crates, with no destruction of bottled products or critical infrastructure. He described this outcome as a significant relief, particularly given the scale of operations typically associated with industrial facilities of that nature.
“I am grateful to God that no lives were lost in this incident,” the governor stated. “While the outbreak was unfortunate, the damage was contained to empty crates, which significantly reduced the potential economic and operational impact.”
Governor Otti commended the rapid and coordinated response of emergency services, particularly the Abia State Fire Service, whose timely intervention ensured that the fire did not escalate into a major disaster. He praised the professionalism and dedication of the firefighters and other first responders, noting that their actions were instrumental in preventing a more severe outcome.
According to him, the swift containment of the fire demonstrated the growing efficiency and preparedness of emergency management structures within the state. He emphasised that such responsiveness is critical in safeguarding both lives and investments, especially in key commercial hubs like Aba.
“The intervention of the fire service and other emergency agencies was commendable,” Otti said. “Their prompt and coordinated efforts ensured that what could have been a catastrophic situation was quickly brought under control. During the visit, the governor also engaged with key representatives of the company, including the Chief Engineer of the Aba facility, Engr. Benjamin Okore.
