In a public notice signed by Mrs Abimbola Oladunjoye on behalf of the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, the commission announced that the exercise would take place at all 62 Registration Area Centres across the territory until Thursday, October 15, 2026.
INEC said the exercise would subsequently continue at its six area council offices from Friday, October 16.
The commission urged registered voters to take advantage of the exercise to verify their names and personal registration details, confirm their designated polling units and raise objections to the inclusion of ineligible persons in the register.
It also called on eligible voters who registered, transferred their registration or updated their details before 2026 to collect any outstanding PVCs.
According to the commission, checking the register is an important step in ensuring that voter information is accurate and that eligible citizens can exercise their franchise during elections.
However, INEC clarified that PVCs for individuals who participated in the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise were not yet available for collection.
The commission assured affected registrants that they would be notified when their cards were ready.
For enquiries and further information, INEC provided the following telephone numbers: 0700 225 5634 632 and 0701 578 0499.
PVC Distribution Ahead of 2027 Elections
The exercise follows an earlier announcement by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, who said during an engagement with journalists in Abuja that PVC distribution would commence on October 9, 2026.
Amupitan said the commission was strengthening its deployment of technology to protect the electoral process and prevent unauthorised individuals from using stolen, lost or compromised voter cards to interfere with elections.
The commission has continued to emphasise the importance of an accurate voter register and secure identification procedures as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Nigeria’s Voter Register Exceeds 103 Million
According to figures cited by the INEC chairman, Nigeria’s national voter register now contains more than 103 million registered voters, with Lagos, Kano and Kaduna states recording the highest numbers.
The Federal Capital Territory has 1,772,043 registered voters.
The national register also reflects a relatively narrow difference between male and female voters. Male registrants number 53,528,218, representing 51.75 per cent of the total, while female voters account for 49,900,497, or 48.25 per cent.
Voters aged between 35 and 49 constitute the largest age group on the register, with 43,265,946 people, representing 41.83 per cent of registered voters.
The figures highlight the scale of the logistical and administrative responsibilities facing the electoral commission as it prepares for the next general elections.
INEC’s ongoing voter register verification and PVC distribution exercise is expected to give eligible voters an opportunity to confirm their registration details and resolve outstanding issues before election day.
The commission has urged residents of the FCT to participate in the exercise within the announced period to help ensure that the voter register is accurate and that eligible voters are prepared to participate in the electoral process.
