Four Dead in Stampede During Ramadan Alms Distribution in Katsina

At least four people have lost their lives following a stampede that occurred at Kofar Guga Quarters in Katsina State during the distribution of Ramadan alms.

The incident took place on the night of February 26, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m., when a large crowd gathered at the residence of a local philanthropist, Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki. The annual charitable exercise, organised to support residents ahead of the Ramadan fast, attracted a significant number of beneficiaries from within and around the community.

According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the Katsina State Police Command, Sadiq Abubakar Aliyu, authorities received a distress call at the Central Police Station indicating that the gathering had become disorderly. The report stated that the crowd surged uncontrollably, leading to a stampede.

Police operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene to restore calm and coordinate rescue efforts. Upon arrival, officers worked to disperse the crowd and evacuate those who had been injured in the chaos. Emergency response measures were initiated, and victims were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Despite these efforts, four individuals later died from injuries sustained during the stampede. The exact circumstances that triggered the rush were not immediately detailed, but large gatherings for charitable distributions have, in previous instances across the country, posed crowd-control challenges when attendance exceeds available space or organisational capacity.

The Katsina State Police Command indicated that further assessment of the incident was ongoing. While no official confirmation was given regarding additional casualties beyond the four fatalities, authorities stated that several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were receiving treatment.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Bello Shehu, expressed deep sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives. He described the incident as tragic and unfortunate, particularly given that the event was intended to provide relief and support to residents during a significant religious period.

He also extended wishes for a speedy recovery to those hospitalised, assuring the public that the Command remains committed to ensuring safety at public gatherings. The police emphasised the importance of proper crowd management and coordination during large-scale charitable activities, especially during periods such as Ramadan when demand for assistance typically increases.

Community members reported that the annual almsgiving event had historically drawn substantial attendance, reflecting both the level of need within the area and the generosity associated with Ramadan preparations. However, as attendance numbers grew, concerns have periodically been raised about the adequacy of crowd-control measures and venue capacity.

Authorities have not announced whether additional guidelines will be introduced for future distributions, but the incident has renewed attention on the risks associated with mass gatherings in residential settings. Law enforcement officials noted that timely reporting by residents enabled a swift response, though the rapid escalation of the crowd surge limited the ability to prevent casualties entirely.

The tragic deaths underscore the delicate balance between humanitarian outreach and public safety logistics. While charitable initiatives play an important role in supporting vulnerable populations, particularly during religious observances, organisers are often encouraged to coordinate closely with security agencies to ensure structured distribution processes and controlled access points.

As investigations continue, the Katsina State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and to cooperate with authorities in providing relevant information that may assist in understanding the full sequence of events.

The loss of four lives has cast a somber tone over what was intended to be an act of compassion and community solidarity, leaving families in mourning and prompting reflection on the need for enhanced safety planning at large public gatherings.
