The management of Covenant University has officially confirmed the tragic death of a final-year student, Toluwase Emmanuel, following a medical emergency that occurred during a football training session on campus.
The institution disclosed the details in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Vice-Chancellor, Timothy A. Anake. The statement sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly in response to widespread allegations of negligence that had surfaced on social media in the aftermath of the student’s death.
According to the university, the incident took place on Monday, April 6, 2026, during a routine football training exercise involving students. Toluwase Emmanuel, who was in his 500 level, reportedly participated actively in the session before stepping out after experiencing fatigue and discomfort, including pain in his leg.
The statement explained that shortly after leaving the training field, the student’s condition deteriorated rapidly. His teammates noticed that he was struggling to breathe and immediately raised the alarm. Acting swiftly, they transported him to the university’s medical centre, which is located directly opposite the sports facility.
“In a short while, his football mates observed that he was gasping for breath,” the statement noted. “They responded promptly by taking him to the Medical Centre’s emergency unit. Unfortunately, by the time he arrived at the facility, he had already stopped breathing.”
Upon arrival at the medical centre, healthcare professionals on duty reportedly initiated emergency procedures without delay. Despite the critical state in which the student was brought in, the medical team made immediate efforts to revive him using established life-saving techniques.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that although the student was effectively unresponsive on arrival, doctors commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in conjunction with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), a device designed to restore normal heart rhythm in cases of cardiac arrest. These interventions, however, did not yield the desired outcome.
“Though he was brought in without signs of life, the doctors responded immediately by administering CPR with an automated external defibrillator,” the statement read. “Despite these efforts, all attempts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful.”
Following the unsuccessful resuscitation attempts, the student was formally pronounced dead by medical personnel. The university indicated that preliminary medical findings pointed to an underlying health issue that had not been previously disclosed.
According to the statement, Toluwase Emmanuel was “certified clinically dead due to a prior undisclosed heart condition,” suggesting that the sudden collapse may have been linked to a pre-existing cardiovascular problem that had not been detected or reported before the incident.
In addressing the wave of criticism that followed the incident, the university strongly refuted allegations that its medical centre failed to provide adequate care. Social media reports had claimed that the student did not receive essential emergency support, including oxygen, and that the response of medical staff was insufficient.
The university dismissed these claims as unfounded, maintaining that all appropriate emergency protocols were followed and that the facility was fully equipped to handle such situations.
“We wish to categorically state that there was no form of negligence in the response of our medical personnel,” the statement emphasised. “There was no shortage of any required equipment needed for the treatment.”
The management further underscored its commitment to maintaining high standards of healthcare within the institution, noting that the medical centre is staffed by qualified professionals and equipped with necessary emergency tools. It insisted that the response to the incident was both timely and consistent with established medical procedures.
In addition to clarifying the medical response, the university highlighted the involvement of its leadership in managing the situation and supporting the bereaved family. Senior officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, were present at the medical centre shortly after the incident and remained engaged throughout the process.
“The management of the University, led by the Vice-Chancellor, was present at the medical centre from the time of the incident,” the statement noted. “We remained with the family and provided support until the burial of the deceased.”
The institution described the late student as a dedicated and energetic member of its academic community, whose loss has left a significant void among students, staff, and the broader university population.
“Toluwase Emmanuel was a diligent and vibrant student,” the statement said. “His passing is not only a loss to his family but also to the entire Covenant University community and society at large.”
The university extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, expressing solidarity during what it described as a deeply painful and difficult time. It also called for understanding and restraint in the public discourse surrounding the incident, urging individuals to avoid spreading unverified information.
The tragic event has, however, sparked widespread reactions online, with many social media users expressing concern over the circumstances of the student’s death. Some commentators alleged that the emergency response at the university’s medical centre was inadequate, suggesting that critical interventions were either delayed or not administered at all.
Among the claims circulating were assertions that the student suffered severe respiratory distress and was not provided with oxygen support, as well as allegations that non-medical interventions, such as prayers, were prioritised over urgent clinical care.
These claims have fueled public debate and intensified scrutiny of healthcare standards within educational institutions. However, the university has maintained its position that such allegations are inaccurate and do not reflect what transpired during the emergency.
By providing a detailed account of the incident, the management aims to reassure the public that appropriate measures were taken and that the unfortunate outcome was not the result of negligence or lack of preparedness.
The incident also raises broader questions about health screening, emergency preparedness, and awareness of underlying medical conditions among students participating in physically demanding activities. While the university has attributed the death to a previously undisclosed heart condition, the case highlights the importance of early detection and disclosure of health risks.
As the university community continues to mourn, attention is likely to remain focused on ensuring that lessons are learned and that systems are strengthened to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
For now, Covenant University has reiterated its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and the well-being of its students, while honouring the memory of a young life lost under tragic circumstances.
