Peter Obi Celebrates Elder Brother at 75, Recalls Refusal to Seek Government Contracts

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has celebrated his elder brother, Dominic Ositadimma Obi, on his 75th birthday, describing him as a man of integrity, humility, contentment and strong family values.

Peter Obi, in a birthday tribute on Sunday, August 30, 2026, said his decision to celebrate his elder brother went beyond their family relationship, stressing that Dominic’s character and principles had made him an exemplary human being.

According to him, his brother never used their relationship to seek personal favours during his eight years as Governor of Anambra State.

Obi said Dominic never visited his office or the Governor’s Lodge to ask for favours, despite being his elder brother and a professional planner and contractor who could have sought government patronage.

He said: “When I was Governor of Anambra State for eight years, he never came to my office or the Governor’s Lodge for a day seeking favours, as many might have expected.”

The former governor added that his brother, who builds homes for clients, never approached him for a government contract throughout his tenure.

Obi recalled that whenever they met, Dominic would embrace him warmly and assure him that he was doing well, before reminding him of the responsibility that came with public office.

According to him, his brother consistently advised him to remain faithful to the promises he made to the people and avoid taking actions that could damage the reputation of their family or community.

“He would solemnly remind me to keep doing what I promised the people and never bring a bad name to the family and my community,” Obi said.

He further disclosed that Dominic would often tell him not to focus solely on his personal challenges, noting that many Nigerians were experiencing even more difficult circumstances.

Obi said his brother encouraged him to use his position to contribute positively to society and improve the lives of the people.

The former governor also revealed that his brother’s decision not to seek personal benefits from his administration was part of a broader resolution reached by members of the Obi family.

He explained that the family had held a meeting and agreed that none of its members should take advantage of his position as governor.

According to him, the family understood the importance of protecting the reputation he was building for the Obi family and their community in Agulu.

Obi said the same principle was extended to his children, stressing that his family members were conscious of the need to maintain integrity and avoid exploiting his public position for personal gain.

Reflecting on Dominic’s 75th birthday, Obi said his elder brother remained concerned about the state of Nigeria and regularly encouraged him to continue working for the public good.

“At 75, my beloved brother remains deeply concerned about Nigeria. Whenever we speak, he is full of prayers and good wishes,” Obi said.

He added that Dominic had repeatedly reminded him that if he ever had another opportunity to serve Nigeria, he should do so with honesty, integrity and the interest of the people at heart.

Obi expressed gratitude to God for preserving his brother and for the values he had demonstrated throughout his life.

He described Dominic’s integrity, humility, contentment and sense of responsibility as qualities worthy of celebration and emulation.

The former governor prayed that God would continue to grant his brother good health, abundant grace, peace and blessings as he begins another chapter of his life.

“Happy 75th birthday, my dearest brother,” Obi concluded.
