Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has extended warm felicitations to Nigerian children on the occasion of Children’s Day, while urging leaders at all levels to prioritise investments in education, healthcare, and the welfare of young people.
In a heartfelt Children’s Day message released on Tuesday, Obi described Nigerian children as the “vibrant pulse” of the nation and expressed optimism about their immense potential despite the country’s present socio-economic challenges.
Addressing children across the country, Obi said the celebration offered an opportunity to reflect on the talent, resilience, creativity, and energy embedded in the younger generation. According to him, every Nigerian child possesses the capacity to become a global leader, scientist, innovator, or entrepreneur if provided with the right environment and opportunities.
He noted that whenever he looks into the faces of Nigerian children—whether in classrooms, internally displaced persons’ camps in Benue State, or on the busy streets of Lagos—he sees hope and extraordinary possibilities for the future of the nation.
Obi stressed that the strength and progress of any country are measured largely by the manner in which it treats and nurtures its children. He lamented the continued rise in the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria and decried a situation where access to quality healthcare, education, and safety remains unavailable to many young Nigerians.
According to him, it is unacceptable that millions of children are denied access to basic education and essential social services, adding that no nation can genuinely aspire to greatness while neglecting its younger population.
The former Anambra State governor argued that if Nigeria truly desires to transition from a consumption-driven economy to a productive and innovative nation, then serious investments must be made in human capital development, especially in children.
He further called on political leaders, parents, teachers, and all stakeholders to recognise that investing in children remains the most strategic investment any nation can make. Obi emphasised that foundational education and healthcare are critical pillars for national development and sustainable growth.
He warned that neglecting children today would amount to mortgaging the future of the country, stressing that nations that fail to prioritise their young population ultimately undermine their long-term prosperity and stability.
Speaking directly to children, Obi encouraged them not to allow their present circumstances to limit their ambitions or dreams. He urged them to remain hopeful, focused, and determined in the pursuit of their goals despite prevailing difficulties.
“Always keep dreaming,” he advised. “Your present situation does not define your future or limit your potential.”
Obi also encouraged children to cultivate curiosity and embrace learning in an increasingly technology-driven world. He urged them to read widely, acquire knowledge, and adapt to modern innovations and digital technologies, noting that the future would belong to those who are intellectually prepared and technologically equipped.
According to him, Nigerian children possess the intelligence, creativity, and resilience needed to compete favourably with their counterparts across the globe.
The former presidential candidate further urged young Nigerians to take pride in their identity and heritage, describing Nigerians as naturally resilient, brilliant, and capable of greatness.
He maintained that despite the nation’s current economic and social difficulties, hope for a better future remains alive through the younger generation.
Obi reassured children that efforts towards building a better Nigeria would continue, adding that his vision remains a country where every child’s dream is valid, schools are secure, and the future of every young person is guaranteed.
He said the collective responsibility of building a nation where children can thrive safely and confidently must remain a top priority for both government and citizens.
The Children’s Day celebration is observed annually in Nigeria to honour children and promote awareness about their rights, welfare, education, and protection. The day also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing children and the urgent need for policies that support their development.
Obi concluded his message by offering prayers for Nigerian children and the country at large, wishing them a joyful celebration and expressing hope for a brighter future.
“Blessings to all Nigerian children, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.
