The nominations cover four National Commissioner positions and two Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) positions. All nominees are subject to screening and confirmation by the Senate.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the nominations in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the statement, Professor Mustapha Aliu has been nominated to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the National Commissioner representing the North-West geopolitical zone.
Bashir Muhammed Umar was nominated to replace Professor Muhammad Adamu as the National Commissioner representing the North-Central zone.
Tinubu also nominated Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the serving Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, as the National Commissioner representing the South-West.
Babalola is expected to succeed Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.
For the Resident Electoral Commissioner positions, the President nominated retired Permanent Secretary Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State.
Zahradden Basiru Sanusi, from Jigawa State, was also nominated to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura as a Resident Electoral Commissioner.
Onanuga explained that the nominations were prompted by vacancies arising from the expiration of the tenures of serving commission officials.
The reappointment of Dr Bala Bila as a National Commissioner forms part of the personnel changes announced ahead of the next general election.
Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process to enable INEC to fill the vacant positions in preparation for the elections.
The nominees will assume their respective offices upon successful completion of the Senate’s screening and confirmation process.
The appointments come as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission expected to oversee the conduct of the polls and ensure compliance with the country’s electoral laws.
